VW GOLF 1.4SE FLAT SPOT

I recently got a golf mk3 with a flat spot at 3000revs 1st 2nd and 3rd gear, that it takes it time over this point noticeably. probly happens in 4th n 5th but bcoz of the gearing u dont notice. but im wondering if any one has heard of this problem as it only happens for a couple of hundered of revs then set back off? does anyone know what this could be?

i work at nissan and hyundai, and weve had a few hyundai i10's with the same problem that it turned out to be a collapsed clutch bearing. could this be it?
