Corsa 1.4 question?

We have a Corsa 1.4 petrol "Y" reg` with a broken cam belt!! I`ve been told that the valves can "miss" the pistons,is this wish-full thinking? or do we definitely have a valve job to do? (or another car?)

Do you know the engine code? Normally the 1.0/1.2s are chain driven and I have repaired these when they have broke.

I would think it will be the z14xe if so these do cause damage.
