Are you sitting comfortably?..then i'll begin.

It all stated about a month ago. Turned the car over to go to work, pulled off the drive and it felt like I had an elephant in the boot! Really really sluggish with no go to it at all.

I turned round and pulled in to my very local independent garage (just up the road).
He had a listen and said it was the turbo that had gone, prob the valves on longer working correctly (tapping noise could be heard). So I put it in and had it replaced with a new turbo (after waiting a week for it to come in but the wrong one was sent, correct one sent 2 days later).

When I got it back and started it the tapping was still there. So i took it back to the garage and refused to pay for the new turbo until I was happy with the job.
After having it for a couple of days they said it was the belt or tensioner. They ordered one in (another 2 day wait), gave the car back to them to sort but when I got it back today STILL that bloody tapping!
He has now told me it's not belt related but internal, most probably in the head. He can't be any more specific that that though and said it's terminal for the engine and it will more than likely go bang at some stage. Brilliant, just what I need!

I have lost faith in my local garage and only paid for the part and not the labour.

The tapping is always there from cold stars but disappears when the engine has been running idle for about 5mins. When it goes, if you give a bit of a rev, it'll just be noticeable as the engine settles.

Anyone had this issue?
Is it the end of the road or can a solution be found?

Any help is much appreciated.
Nic.

Sounds like a lifter with a knackered seal to me.

Cam followers are known to fail on these engines, change the oil with a high quality oil as this can sometimes free off a sticky one but if it doesn't cure it them it will need to come apart.
It is very unlikely to cause serious engine damage if left

You are certainly right to not go back to that garage.

They think the belt tensioner is gone then say it's not that? What kind of mechanics are they?

Where are you in the country?
If you can get to Hampshire you wont find a better VX mechanic than this guy
