The girlfriend mentioned a couple of weeks ago she is getting less to a tank than she used to on her 70K mile 56 plate corsa.

Taking it for a long motorway run over Christmas I only managed 38-39 MPG which seems poor for a 1.2 at a steady 70 MPG cruise (although not sparing the horses getting up to speed).
It's just gone through an MOT so in my mind that rules out massive over fuelling.

Any ideas?

It's quite a heavy car for 80bhp to be pulling round, coupled with the cold weather I don't think that's too bad

Cheers guys.

My old 2.0 Mk2 mondeo used to get 34 day in day out so that's a shame.

Makes it easier to justify a replacement at some point I guess.

I'm averaging about 45mpg in my Corsa C 1.2, but 4000rpm@80mph in fifth means that it can be quite thirsty on long journeys. I tend to stick at 60-65mph, and even then it's at just over 3000rpm! Fuel consumption seems to be best on A-roads and around town, which is fortunately where I do most my driving!

I was told the fuel eco 'should' get better once worn in, 15k later still no improvement trip has average of 38.1mpg
I always use the instant consumption on the trip and try keep that as high as possible depending on road, cruise control helps too if you have it, even on 30mph roads etc

My biggest frustration is we got the car on the basis that fuel was quoted to be 40+ urban, 55+ non urban (or thereabouts) yet everywhere you look NOBODY gets anywhere near?!

  • Should have bought the CDTI biggrin

I've got a 2003 Corsa with an older 1.2 engine that supposedly drinks more, yet I manage 45mpg! So much for progress! On that basis, an old Chevette should manage at least 80mpg...

I can confirm both the 1.2 and 1.4 petrol have dire fuel economy. My (from new) 1.4 SE was averaging 36 mpg, mostly on the motorway, some A road driving.
It was costing so much to run it ended up hardly getting used.

I've now got a 1.3 diesel Corsa which averages nearly 60 mpg. I don't know why there is such a difference because the two cars are pretty much the same spec wise (SE).

The Adam has the same ancient range of petrol engines which probably explains why they aren't selling well.
