Hi guys,
Have posted this on the astraownersclub.com forum with no response so far so thought i'd give it a try on here:

Just changed head gasket, water pump, cambelt, tensioner and idlers and exhaust manifold on my brothers 2000 2ltr SRI (x20xev I believe).

Upon starting the exhaust was smoking a lot, but presumed this was all the water/coolant in the exhaust system, as when it failed water was spitting out of the cracked manifold! After about 45 mins of running it finally cleared and is pretty much normal now.

Now when driven forward, when you slow down, press the brake then clutch, the engine stalls 9 times out of 10. Also when reaching 2k revs, the engine really struggles and is hesitant until 3k revs when it gets going again as usual. Engine doesnt appear to be using any oil/water.
Apparently according to my brother it used to do this before, and spraying carb cleaner in the throttle body used to help, but surely theres more of an underlying problem somewhere?

Also, the engine management light is on. Plugged in my OBD reader (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U480-Unive...item3376f6c836) but this didnt work so did the 'paperclip' test to get the codes but struggling to understand them, appreciate if anyone more in the know could translate this number of flashes that I counted :

1,3,2,7,10,3,4,10,10,1,3,10,10,1,10,10

Apologies for such a massive first post! Any help appreciated.

Paul

err.. sounds like it might be the idle valve which is usually on the side of the throttle body. Take it off and give it a good clean. Maybe consider buying a new one.
What's the story behind the cracked manifold, failed gasket etc?
Spraying tons of carb cleaner into the TB and not letting it dry properly before starting might have caused some issues, that stuff can make a big bang laugh
eta: yes as I thought the x20xev is the 'ecotec', same as I had in my Calibra which had an iffy idle valve (very common fault). Funny enough after I cleaned it and started it before letting the cleaner fully evaporate there was a bit of a pop from the exhaust.. and a couple of weeks later the back box and cat fell apart cry

etaa:
how to read the flashes:
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_co...
Why Ecotecs cutout:

etaaa:
ok I'm struggling to understand what the codes mean, that topbuzz site doesn't list the SRi but I reckon you want to look at the fault codes for the simtec 56.5 (I could be wrong).

Story is the exhaust manifold was already cracked right across the top, then head gasket went, oil full of water etc. Found gasket had failed on cylinder 3. Decided it was wise to do cambelt, water pump etc while it was apart for peace of mind.

Will give the idle valve a good clean out tomorrow.
Another suggestion is that could be a timing issue, though I spent a fair bit of time getting the marks aligned on cams and crankshaft so was 99.9% sure I'd got it right!

Fault codes are:
P1327 (knock control, maximum spark limit...)
P0340 (camshaft sensor)
P0130 (O2 sensor)
P0100 (Mass air flow sensor)

Could an idle problem really kick up these kind of faults?

err.. could be all your sensors are buggered and I guess running overly lean due to ICV could cause knock?
Still the manifold was cracked, how the f**k does that even happen?
Obviously try clearing the codes and running for a bit to see what fresh codes you get, if you haven't done so already.
