Hi all,

Can anyone help?

I am in the middle of trying to change the final drive ratio in my F20 gearbox. Crownwheel has been nicely swapped over so next step is the pinion. Old and new gear clusters are on the bench so time for disassembly....On the F20 gearbox the pinion is machined as part of the main shaft...but after several days of trying I can't seem to get the main shafts out of the gearbox.

When looking at the outer end I've removed the circlips, the first set of gears on the outside of the aluminium casing as well as the keyed locking washer things. I have also driven out the locking pins from the gear selectors where they are fixed to the selector shafts and 'tapped' the ends of the shafts to see if they'll move but nothing.

Before I 'tap' harder and cause damage, has anyone got an idiots guide / pictures etc on how to disassemble the gear clusters / remove the main shafts? I have noticed there is one circlip around each of the main shaft seals on the inner side of the casing but these look more like seal retention clips than stopping the main shafts coming out.

Any help, greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Mike

Not sure if this is any good to you (or possibly even a bit late now) but there's a guide on a Cavalier forum about changing 5th in an F20 for one from an F18WR.
