mk3 astra help.....aargh.

this morning my work donkey astras engine died over a few seconds and the engine management light came on.had just dropped off my daughter at school about 800mts distance from home before going to work,didn't turn off engine.it felt a little lacking in power(not that it really had any)and would not rev just before it died.thinking fuel pump gone(carb model) but can smell fuel when cranking over,don't know if it's connected but put on hazards but they didn't flash only telltale stayed on on dash.any ideas?
