Advice on a new pruchase - 56 plate astra estate

Looking at buying an astra estate, now the advert says 1.8 and there is a 1.8 badge on the back, but the details, log book and HPI check are all coming back as a 1.6.
Is there a simple way of verifying what engine is in it, and does anyone have any idea why they would rebadge a 1.6 with a 1.8 (other than fitting a s/h replacement tailgate)
Weirdly I did a little search on the reg, and found an old advert for it with less miles, and the same mistake - listing as a 1.8 but the details state 1.6.
That says to me the badge has been on for a while.
So.
1. what's the physical difference between the 2 engines? anything easy to check?
2. where is the engine number stamped?
3. Any tell tale signs to look for specific to VX AStra's?
4. The paint code sticker is really "corroded" all over - is this normal?
Any help would be appreciated.

The serial number does not really relate to the vehicle spec its just assigned when its built. if you want i can PM you the whole list of what the vehicle had fitted when it was built?

Suppose I could Vmax it, 0-60 or RR it to find PS?
