Hello all.
I went to start up my 99 1.8 astra yesterday after it had been resting for about a week and there were some problems.
I turned the ignition and it began to crank but then stopped, no big bang or anything. Turned the key again and got only a whirring noise, but the engine was not cranking. I opened the bonnet and tried again, when I turn the ignition the fan belt spins.
the battery seems fine so after reading a few forums I gave the starter a few knocks with a hammer..... Nothing.
I also put the car in gear and moved it a little, no start after this.
I'm not sure where to start, starter motor? cam belt? flywheel?
your help will be appreciated!

You can discount the immobiliser in the fob as the car will turn over and run for a second or two before dying if it is that.

Have you checked fuel lines/spark plugs are ok?
