With the iminent delivery of my expanding brood I have been looking around for 7 seats with a bit of go.

Ive seen a few with low miles nearby and wondered if they are any good to live with?...

Over to you....

No, in a word, we splahed out onm the smax when 3rd arrived. Zafira has a single bench seat so is really no use as a 7 seater if you're using car seats and hate to say is but the engine is too much for that car.

Zafira back seats appear to be a bench, but takes 3 cars seats. Each of the 3 spaces has it's own 3 point seat belt. Had 3 car seats in back of mine. Tight but do-able. Then of course 2 further separate seats in the boot.

No idea what the GSi is like, I had a 1.8. Great load lugger. Nice to drive. Not very exciting though.

Loved my Zafira GSi, would disagree about the engine being too much for the car (mines was running around 250bhp), suspension is a bit wallowy, I fitted some Bilstein B6 dampers to mine with the standard springs and it transformed the handling.

You can get three car seats on the bench plus two more in the boot seats. We've done it.

Wife has a 1.6 so can't comment on the GSi aspect though...

oily bits are astra, reliable if looked after.

The rear flip up seats don't have a footwell as such, fine for smaller kids but teenagers are going to get uncomfortable on a long drive.
Compared to "full size" MPVs the boot is smaller when all seats are occupied, so make sure to check that when looking at one.

To be honest if you want a "sporty" mpv I'm not sure there is much about that will compare ?

About the best option if you need to lug numerous kids about and want something with a bit of poke. Reliable enough and decently built car.

Would be significantly more expensive but Ford did/do a 2.5 turbo smax (basically a focus ST engine)

The Gsi is quite good fun because you get nice recaro seats, an eager 200 bhp 2.0 turbo petrol, and it has plenty of grip from its 17" 225/45's. The leather trim is a worth while option and does feel rather nice.

The Zafira is a very clever design, flat folding rear seats make it a 5, 6 or 7 seater - choice is yours. They are quite narrow so does not feel any bigger than an Astra to squeez through gaps.

Performance is pretty good will go head to head with a BMW 330 on the motorway. Its great fun to blast past people out of roundabouts in a big 7 seater. Lots of grip and huge amounts of lean if you push in the twisty bits (amusing for me as dont have any kids to worry about!).

Look out for the following;

Turbo failure - I've had 6 Gsi's and one 2.0 turbo mk2 and they all either needed a new turbo or had previously had the turbo replacement. Usually around 50k miles the turbo needs changed (does not affect the VXR models so much).

Budget for £650 for a replacement turbo (eg Turbo Developments) and a couple of hours labour to fit and replace the oil and filter.

Also look out for rear doors elec windows and c/locking not working common fault easy fix.

Alloys scuffed to bits - hate to say it but must be women drivers as all the ones I had needed all 4 alloys refurbed.

Ref turbo failure - yeah the oil seals pack up...

You can't get the original turbo unit from Vauxhall any more, they will sell you a VXR unit and a few little pipes to make it fit (water pipes from memory). Its an easy job and the turbo is £350ish I think ?

If you can get me some of these turbo's at £350 I will buy ten tomorrow.

Try again at £900.

I have had one for a couple of years now, its the best option for a 7 seater and can still be fun, feels quick enough but the handling is not good with all the weight.

I have a 61 plate SRi. 1.7 Diesel 130

Its ok for local stuff but not as much fun as SWMBO's Mazda 5

The seats are too high, it's noisey, it has the mother of all blind spots with the A pillars,

Back to an Astra for me next month.

I've driven one of those, while the engine is nice it uses a lot of fuel in the much lighter Focus. A Galaxy must struggle to get over 20mpg around town.

I had one as a hire car a couple of years ago, only thing I really remember about it was its tremendous thirst for petrol! The sport button was good, firmed the steering up & made the throttle more responsive which was nice.

What sport button, you sure it was a GSI turbo?
