Hi,

I own a vauxhall Astra H 1.9 CDTI SRI XP 5 Door 2006, recently I have been doubting my cars fuel consumption. The computer reads an on average consumption of 45.5MPG but I am confident this is not correct given the real life range I'm achieving.

I fill up once or perhaps twice a week costing give or take £60-£70 a time, roughly from a tank I am getting between 400-450 miles max and this is mostly motorway miles at normal speeds, is this right for this car?

I have owned the car for several years now and put a lot of miles under its belt, 140,000 at the moment and increasing daily. It’s a 2006 model and does not appear to have any obvious fault with the engine, running of this or anything in that department. It’s been serviced above and beyond what the manufacturers guide states and I've just purchased 4x brand new Conti Contact Sport 3's hoping this might improve consumption, so far no improvement??

so...can anyone who has a similar car/engine let me know how many miles you get from a full tank , not what the computer says, what you actually clock up in real miles.

An Astra Mk5 has a 52 litre tank (according to the manual) which is 11.4 gallons. If your computer is reporting an average of 45mpg then in its most basic terms, 45 x 11.4 = 513... so, you should be getting around 513 miles from a 11.4 gallon tank if you are averaging 45mpg. That said, you won't be running the tank from absolute maximum to bare minimum so if you take a gallon as a sort of error margin, then lop 45 miles off 513 miles and you seem to be pretty much bang on the money?

Excuse the maths if it's st, it's late!

No, thanks, Maths is good, I did a similar format too but I still felt unsure, think I needed a second opinion.

Cheers for the help, was beginning to think my driving style was the problem smile

Have you considered havingt he car remapped or even having a tuning box fitted. Not only do both option lift the power from circa 150bhp to nearer 200bhp, but those who have them have reported an improvement in economy too (when you're not using the 200bhp to its full potential that is!) Seems like a win/win situation? A mate of mine had a Vectra 1.9CDTi with a DTUK tuning box, it goes extremely well and as said, he's found it's actually doing slightly better fuel wise when on a cruise.

I have looked into this before, is the DTUK one about £250 or so? a couple of mates have suggestion I take this route too.

I guess I'm being lazy, as you say its win/win on both sides. Did you're mate mention how much of an improvement on fuel he got and are there any known issues with it?

What! how do you drive if you dont mind me asking?????

Thats good from a 1.6. I've had the 1.8 SRI petrol on hire before and it was rubbish on fuel and had no power what so ever.
