because they are economical, reliable safe family transport, that look as good if not better than other cars in their class.

Yup was in the back of an estate one in Finland as a cab. What a horrible place to be. I'm only 5ft 8 but I felt claustrophobic because of the low roofline.

What one have you got, and what makes it so awful compared to what you are comparing it to?

I have one at the moment, and I'd be keen to see what your thoughts are as I too have some concerns, but I wouldn't say 'awful'.

drove a 1.8 when they first came out, not the fastest thing on four wheels but lightyears ahead of the vectra, in terms of build quality, ride handling etc

OK I had a SRI petrol on loan for a few days, and it much better than the rental car I got yesterday.

I currently drive a 2011 Skoda Octavia VRS, but not trying to do a like 4 like.

The car feels like its got no power, I think I have the 140 diesel, it pulls like an old man and is really noisy. The steering is sloppy, but I must say the ride is excellent. The one I have at the moment whilst mine is in for repair (someone ran into me) it is the lowest spec, which I should not expect much of, but its just not a nice place to be, seats are uncomfortable, that handbrake is useless and i do not like that awful pixel display.

On the upside it does have loads of space.

I agree about the handbrake. Unnecessary and not easy to use.

Not sure about the power - mine's a 160bhp SRi (diesel) and I like it, it's just as if not 'faster' than a 2006 BMW 320D which aslo had 160bhp which I had for a few years.

Comparing it to the VW 140bhp diesels (owned for some time, too) is easy - this is a lot better, without doubt. What I find good with the VX is that the power is delivered progressively and you can rev it and get power right through the range - the VW has an 'all or nothing' power delivery which I dislike. The VX is longer geared, too - it'll do nearly 70 in second. Mind you if your VRS is a petrol none of this matters.

You're right about the steering - too light at speed, but I find the seats in the SRi to be excellent but only after an hour's worth of fiddling.

Why oh why they put that stupid electric button handbrake I do not know!

A few tweaks and it could be a great car. The SRI I had was much better than this thing I have now.

The VRS is TDI and I agree VW is nothing or rip your head off, when I drove the SRI Insignia I was generally thinking of getting one. Maybe I should drive the entry level Skoda, may have a moan about them too.

Agree they look well. Disagree with the rest, though. The old cement mixer engine is awful, reliability is usual Vauxhall, and well I guess they're safe as long as you don't mind not being able to see out the back.

I can only comment on the one I have I guess, which is an ELite Nav 160 tourer. April 2010 car, covered now 55k computer shown average of 52.7mpg never let me down (famous last words). The engine is noisier than some rivals but has plenty of torque for towing.

On my 3rd, had 160TD estate manual, a 160 Auto estate, and a 160 man hatch. I love them. 1st one has a normal handbrake this is better than the electric one although i have got used to this. The engine is much quieter than my previous two, i know they were upgraded in this respect.

They re a spacoius, good looking car that gives decent mpg ride well and handle much better than most of us can comfortably use.

Brake pads wear fast but then this is a much bigger car than people think.

Someone earlier said there was no head room in the estate, this is simply untrue. I am six foot and can sit behind my drivers seat adjusted for me very comfortably. Hatch backs are more comromised for head room.

Dealer experiences will vary from dealer to dealer some are great some crap.

On a long run this week, (Manchester to London) I changed my mind on this motor. I managed around 50mpg which in the Diesel world is ok, the comfort is better than the Skoda Octavia and loads of cabin room, although the boot is much smaller. (Saloon v Saloon) The one big downer when I got the car (hired) was that it absolutely stunk of sour milk.....

Anyway, all in all a very good car, residual prices are not the best but TBH if you are looking for a car for up to 5 years to bang mileage on, this is definitely worth a look.

I would go for the SRI SAT NAV version

I agree. I have just had a year old Elite 160 CDTi (ecoflex) for work. It's a great car. The steering is precise and ride/handling is good. Gears are very long and take some getting used to how it works, but plenty of torque if you need to give it a squirt to get by. Engine is noisy (compared to my old Passat) but I'll forgive it that as it appears to be a lot of motor car for the money. Just love the colour/ interior and the keyfob operated tailgate is a superb gadget. My only grouse at this stage is the seat belt clip. It's bloody awkward to get in! However, it's a great looking motor car and I'm liking it.

ETA. My mate at work has just got an SE Tourer ex VX car. He loves it to bits too. We've both come off Passats and much prefer the Insignias.
