Weight - 1545 kg

I'm still learning all this but isn't that like 60 odd bhp/tonne?
Thing is my 20 year old Discovery only has 10bhp more (when new...) and weighs Power Output - 98 bhp

That Astra must be a ROCKETSHIP in comparison!
That might be expected from a Landie diesel, less so from a family car.
It did only develop 59bhp, although at 68bhp/ton it's actually slightly better than the new car!

I found the 1.4 Turbo Astra felt much slower than it actually was, the 1.6 turbo was much the same.
There was a time not too long ago where as 150 and (as near as makes no difference) 190bhp medium sized hatchback was considered quick, and ones endowed with a turbo would be considered bonkers. Now weight, technology, safety features, big wheels and better tyres, and increased bulk of cars makes that kind of power feel very ordinary.
Ford Cosworths and 1st Gen Imprezas with 220ish BHP were considered to be very fast cars and were given 4wd to help them cope, now you can buy a diesel saloon with more power, and a fwd hot hatch that out of the box has more power and with a few £100 spent on electro-trickery can have pushing 300bhp or what was once supercar levels of power.
Added to all of this lots of people now have no idea how to make a petrol engine with modest power work for them as they have become so accustomed to how easily accessible the performance of a modern TDI lump is that they instantly deride any car as too slow.

This has confirmed my impression of the one I had on hire last week. Saw the paperwork with SRI on it and thought it might have a bit getup and go but ended being amazed how many circumstances there were where my speed would be 50+(sometimes 70+!) and I would need to change down just to maintain a constant speed. Strangely I quite liked the rest of car, defintely a big step up from previous Astras although the steering is still pretty dull.
The 1.8 Zafira I curerently had was slower than smoke off ste when I first got it, now it seems to have loosened up a bit and will sit at 0.9 leptons without too much trouble, aside from the noise. It also drinks fuel no matter what speed it does. I am hoping the rental company take the damn thing away soon...

If thats the correct weight then it has less bhp/ton than my 923kg 61bhp toaster. Power Output - 98 bhp
