Hello,

as posted on the kit car forum, does anyone have a reliable source for UNF and UNC titanium bolts?
Metric no problem, but I'm having trouble finding imperial stuff. Even from the States!

TIA,
Mick.

One I have used satisfactorily (in the States):
http://www.olander.com/catalog/index3.htm

But for use as a replacement in a joint designed to use a steel fastener in an automotive or other critical application, this is most likely a bad idea.

RoKay, I'll pm you with a list. I only need just over a dozen at the moment.

BBL-Sean, I was of the understanding it's very strong, and half the weight of steel? They do use it a lot in aircraft.
It was recomended to me by a fellow who used them on his rally car.

Purespeed, there are 4 grades, 1 being the softest, and 4 the hardest, but I have no comparison with normal HT fasteners.
I'd be interested to learn more if anyone is in the know. Especialy if I'm doing the wrong thing.

Cheers,
Mick.

Mick,

Yes just mail me your requirements. At that sort of number providing we have the spec your looking for there should be no problem getting a few out to you.

Steel alloys used in high-tensile strength bolts are stronger than the strongest titanium alloy bolts of the same size. For anything over 8.8, do not replace with titanium alloy fasteners. For 8.8, select the fastener carefully, ensuring it is of comparable UTS to 8.8. Consult your local fastener specialist rather than just buying off of e-Bay or similar. Best of luck.

O.K. I've been looking into this a bit more over the last couple of days.
You are quite right Sean.
Titanium is stronger than high tensile steel, weight for weight, but not of the same size.

So, it was a bad idea!

Thanks for the repilies, and the heads up. smile

RoKay, thanks for your kind offer, but obviously I won't be needing them now. smile
