Lotus 49 Cosworth - the most beautiful F1 car ever
OK, anyone dispute it?

Lotus, for sure, but personally I prefer the 16, the 25 and the 78 to the 49.

Part of it is the purity of design:

Take a simply streamlined monocoque
Bolt on a DFV (which was specifically designed from day one for this car)
Bolt on a gear box
Front suspension is inboard
Rear suspension is bolted to the engine

End of story

No complicated bodywork
No extra add-ons

I prefer the 33 to the 25 and the 72 to the 49, but for purity of line you cannot beat the BRM P261 or the Eagle F1.

The Eagle along with 1961 Sharknose Dino were perhaps the most beautiful of F1 cars but somehow I still consider any of the McLaren Canam cars as the most beautiful of racing cars ever.

There was a monster thread on this topic a while ago.

I rate any body styling by Frank Costin.

So, that includes the Lotus 16 and Vanwall.

Well I guess it wasn't the most beautiful, but as this is the Caterham forum, we should at least mention the Seven that raced in the South African Grand Prix in 1962 (coming 10th IIRC)

My 1996 Classic has the original 7 front suspension - which was based on the suspension set up of the Lotus 12 - which also raced in F1. Does that make my 7 a Formula 1 car?
