I've got a zetec engined caterham, thats always suffered from starting problems when the engine was hot. From cold the starter motor turned the engine over fine, but when hot it always struggled to turn the engine over, it felt a bit like a flat battery, ie a sluggish motor.

Anyway, my current starter motor gave up the ghost recently, so I took the opportunity to replace it with a reduction gear starter motor .

The new motor is vastly superior, the engine now spins freely hot or cold, its a joy to use, its something I should have done years ago but didnt because the reduction gear starters were about twice the price of a normal starter.

I just wanted to let anyone who has the same problems as me know, its absolutely worth buying, it transforms the way the car starts.

Hi,

Not Caterham-related but I am just having one fitted on my old Jag, double benefit of better starting plus much easier to remove if needed further down the line - much smaller than the original.

Raceline supplied it, and it came to £236 inc vat and delivery.

I'm sure you could get one cheaper if you shop around.

I have a Brise starter on my K. Not sure if it's a reduction gear type, but it's brilliant. Properly zips the engine round, and a design that's not as prone to the hot starting hassles of the normal Caterham type.
