Having finally managed to drag myself to my local circuit to try out their noise testing facilities, I have come away with a 100.5 dB(A) reading, 0.5 dB(A) above their noise limit.

I already have the Caterham 'trackday' silencer, and as mine is an SV there is no induction hole to cover with a carbon airbox (so I am running the Pipercross filter).

I have seen a few postings suggesting the titanium Raceco silencers are not only lighter than the Caterham ones but can produce a useful reduction in the dB output. So my question is does anyone have direct experience in comparing the Caterham 'trackday' silencer and the Raceco silencer, and if so was there a useful reduction in dB?

A Raceco exhaust is next on my list of upgrades for my R500, although I am a little jealous that you made 100.5 db, mine is 102!

I would thoroughly recommend Ammo, a lovely guy and a true expert in his field.

I have seen several Raceco exhausts and they do look beautifully crafted and from what I understand c. 96db isn't unrealistic.

I would urge you to give Ammo a call and take it from there.

Matt

I think you can still get a lot of induction noise even with no hole in the bonnet...

a few years back, I had an R500 SV. The combination of Raceco titanium silencer and Reverie induction kit made it quiet enough to do track days at Bedford and they have some of the most stringent noise limits in the country.

You forgot to add "and my inability to drive the car very fast" just after the phrase "Reverie induction kit...." hehe

I can give some advice here. My R500 K has a Raceco exhaust and the Caterham Reverie kit with snorkels fitted. With a freshly packed silencer, it still records 100db static. As Murph says, it is actually the induction side that you need to pay attention too.

With the Caterham titanium silencer fitted, it is over 105db and thus too noisy for any "noisy" day.

...beer soon Nigel?

Jeez, then I am doing well with 100.5dB static - I am guessing the Duratec is quieter than the K, or the bonnet is doing a good job on the induction noise.

By the sounds of things, first stop is a discussion with Ammo around a new silencer, then some thought over whether I want to do anything about induction noise. To be honest, as long as I can reliably come under 100dB static I will be happy, so blocking the induction noise may not be a priority.

If you already have a large silencer (one presumes the Caterham "trackday" one is designed to get you on them, not thrown off!) and bugger all on the induction except a foam filter, I honestly think you're barking up the wrong tree in terms of reliably getting the noise down....

Would Caterham let you try an airbox if you popped there and measured the noise perhaps?

Has anyone tried putting some fireprrof soundproofing on the underside of the "engine lid" ? Or does the induction noise mainly go down and out the bottom ?

I did exactly this on my Westie and knocked about 1.5db off on its own....yes it looks crappy and there's still holes in the bonnet, but it worked.

Between this, a new airbox and a new silencer I got my car (hayabusa engined) down from 110db to 102db...which is a massive difference. Here's a pic of the underside of the bonnet.

I lined the underside of my bonnet around the induction with firproof felt - like the stuff on the underside of your car carpets in the tin top.

It helped quite a bit, but I cant recall the figures...

For my duratec I have a C400 airshroud for quiet days that works very well.

City, near Barbican. I guess you're still around Echange Sqaure from time to time? Let me know what your movements are and we'll sort something out.

I could make it to the Wharf...or meet at The George London Bridge...may even get Murph and Fergus out for a beer to meet you and talk Caterhams...let me know when you think you'll be up there next and we can put something in the diary

A bit later in the summer....

Car's now serviced and back on the road for the first time in 15mths! I want to get a few road miles on it this time before taking it on track. But I need to get a couple of days in - they'll need to be very loud days as I have no exhaust and a pair of old pants for air filters on mine....induction roar alone is probably 150dB smile

Em came out in it for the first time on Sunday biggrin

Definitely up for beers of course!

(Happened across some old photos of my car at my first ever track day....remember the roundels well smile).
