The last couple of times I've driven the 7 it has been losing power; foot down and nothing. The other day it did this, then stopped completely, but soon started again.

This morning on the way to work it did the same, but then completely conked out and simply would not start.

Managed to get a tow into work (cheers Supervisor Steve and your Cherokee!) but it's just sitting there now (I'm working away for a couple of days).

So, when I get back, where do I start?

I'd start with the coil.
Before I switched to wasted spark ignition I went through about 3 or 4 of them! Symptoms started with occasional hesitation and graduated via slight power loss to not running at certain rpm and finally stopping altogether. It's often an intermittent problem to start with and therefore difficult to diagnose but with a complete conking out, if you put a meter across the coil it should be fairly conclusive.

Failing the ignition system, it could be a fuel supply issue. Either a knackerd pump or blocked lines/filter. My old BEC car suffered similar with it's pump was on the wain, it finally gave up on the M25 on the way back from LeMans one year!

I'd start with the basics, pull each HT lead off in turn put a plug in it and see if its sparking while you crank the engine over. Make sure plug is earthed against the engine though

If its sparking ok pull the fuel feed pipe off to the injector rail and then quickly turn the ignition on to check for fuel.

Do this then report back and we'll be able to help track down the problem.

You might also want to search for TPS and TPS reset over at the other place.

Don't you love it when it turns out to be the simplest, easiest to fix things that go wrong?

Like, for example, a dirty dizzy cap..?

All sorted now, thanks for the advice guys.

Don't break out the cigars just yet - it's still conking out.

A new distributor cap and rotor arm are in order, methinks.
