Has anyone had a speedo sensor fail yet. Mine went yesterday after 6000 miles. Speedo went haywire for a few seconds then the instrument fuse went. It appears to have gone to a short circuit. I don't like the lightweight cable that must flex continuously.

Anyone come up with a better setup or sensor than Caterham - they're not cheap to replace every 6000 miles frown

I doubt it needs replacing. Take the back wheel off and clean and adjust the air gap, should be 1-1 1/2 mil. If you turn the ignition on then spin the disc the little light on the sensor should come on as it passes over the castelations. You might need to fiddle with the gap until it does!

It is more than just the gap needing adjusted. As soon as you plug the sensor in it blows the fuse. I've checked it with a meter and all the pins are shorted together. I'm guessing it is the cable but not the easiest thing to repair. Just wondered if others had experienced similar failures or used a different arrangement.

David,
Further to my first posting, mine was also blowing the fuse each time I tried it. I phoned Brett at CC Midlands and he said nine times out of ten the sensor just needs cleanig and adjusting. So I took it off and did just that, replaced it, fiddled with the gap and hey presto, it's been fine since. I can only imagine a bit of dirt got in somewhere and that's what was shorting it out.

Peter.

David

are you sure the wires has worn through on a chassis rail or something? I can't see a proximity sensor going short unless it's had a clout.

I've now had a closer look and found that the inner cores of the cable were broken and they showed signs of getting very hot. Whether it was fatigue that broke the wire, or something hit it, I don’t know. There’s enough lead left to repair it – I’ve got some high quality super flexible cable so I’ll give that a go. Thanks for your help!
