FORD type 9 gearbox + VX Red top - Should I !
Discussion
I am considering mating a 5 speed Ford 'type 9' gearbox with a 2.0l 16 valve Vauxhall 'red top' engine putting out about 225bhp.
Does anyone know if the gearbox is up to this sort of power or will I be breaking them for a past time?
Is the box compatible or are there a lot of potential problems to overcome?
Will an XR4i to red top bellhousing be suitable or is it different?
Many thanks as usual for any help you can offer.

I know that BGH do a heavy duty Type 9 gearbox for that sort of power. I'm told it's a good unit. I'd post on www.locostbuilders.co.uk for more info, or the Kit Car forum on PH.

225 with all the T9 tricks should be ok as long as you don't speed shift it beyond what it can do. Heel and toeing will help too.
Many say that revs kill gearboxes so if you stay around the 7500 mark that will help too.
My then standard VX power saw the T9 lasting ~3 years.
It was a while since I had mine done but Scorpio input shaft and Quaife Close ratio gear set are a must. It feels so nice with close ratio!
I went for semi helical which I guess are a little stronger than fully and loose a little less power. They do not whine quite as badly as straight cut but they still make a bit of noise.
There are also tricks to the syncros and perhaps more.
This box has lasted 9 years and still going.
I have several 7 acquaintances with BGH experience - good, and there is a fully helical option I understand.
