Good evening all. Does anyone have an easy to follow guide to removing the windscreen on a Caterham 7 and replacing it with the aeroscreen? I have recently acquired a Caterham R300 with both screens and before i jump straight in i would prefer to take a bit of advice from someone who knows! Thanks in advance for any help.

Hopefully you will have the screen nuts welded to plates that stay in place when you take the 4 stantsion bolts out otherwise you will most likely need to remove the knee trims to get a spanner on the nuts and thats a bit of a nigtmare.

1, Remove the wiper arms by lifting the silver clips and pulling off.
2, Under the scuttle find the two heated screen wires and pull the connections apart, there one at either end.
3, Get someone to hold the screen while you undo the bolts and lift it off while threading the heated screen wires through. You might have to cut the connections off to get through the holes if they spades. Refit with bullets.
4, Bolt and clip the aero on.
5, Empty washer bottle if you have mates who like to press buttons!

You can get the spade connectors through the holes in the scuttle. If you slide the silicone sleeves off the connector and up the wire, then you can scrunch it up, and it'll pass through, followed by the spade.
It also helps if you put a blacket on the bonnet, to lay the screen flat on, while you pass the wires wink

Do the reverse when you get fed up of dressing up like a Tureg, or wearing helmet, and decide to go back to being sensible with a windscreen! whistle

"You can get the spade connectors through the holes in the scuttle."

I've never managed it. In my experience the holes for the wires are tiny and no bigger than the wire. Even removing the rubber grommet, the hole has been far too small to pass a bullet or spade connector through. Cutting the connector off may be your only option and refitting a connector if you refit the windscreen.

My car came with holes big enough to get spade connectors through. I think it is down to the drill at hand when the car is made wink

Ah, forgot about the grommets! You have to pop those out too.
Just recently put my screen back on, after removing it to polish the scuttle. cool

Clearly the size of the holes for the wires must vary. Trust me just to get the smaller ones!!

Could someone explain how to get to the bolts inside, I need to remove the knee plates to get the quick change brackets on...

I do hear a lot of `once you go aero you never go back`. I'm about to find out - if I can get these d4mn knee plates off...

Thanks.

you remove the knee trims first then you can get to the nuts. It can be a fiddle to do but they will come out because the went in!

James, if your car came with both of the screens then you should (fingers crossed) have the captive nuts on the inside of the scuttle. Otherwise you'll want to get a set of these and fit them, which does require taking the knee trim panels off.

Mick, recent cars seem to have less useful space connectors fitted, with hard covers. I snipped ours off and replaced with Jap style bullets (the ones with clear flexible sheaths).

Andy, you need to remove the knee trim panels which may require drilling the rivet heads off and using a punch to push the shank of the pop rivet through. Its one of those jobs to do once and then replace the trim panels with black self tapping screws.

Once the trim panel is removed you will easily see the two 13mm nuts that hold the windscreen stanchions on each side. Don't forget to loosen the three countersunk screws on each side of the windscreen which releases the tension on the scuttle and makes removeable and replacement much easier and less likely to damage anything

On recent cars they've replaced the rivets for the knee trim panels with self tappers anyway. I guess CC were listening or got tired of drilling out rivets themselves.

Or this:

I've recently put the "wimpscreen" back on, as the Brooklands screens need a bloody good polish.

Tip for putting the windscreen back on esp if a one man job.

Put an old pair of socks over the triangular end of the windscreen stanchions, that way when slipping it over the scuttle you wont scratch the paint.
