I once built one of these many years ago... Vaguely thinking of revisiting the Caterham rush again - on a 4th car basis!

What's the general opinion on this?

Craig,

IMO, you'd be better off with an ex - RSA than this link.. It's had an engine swap, no knowledge of the mialage, has different wheels on 1 side to the other, another different 'loy as the spare, is ex hillclimb / sprint, and "has had 8 years off the road" - a prang, perhaps?

Even if it's just an honest laid up scenario, my guess would be that a reasonable amout of spannering / refreshing of bushes would be needed to get it right.

On the flipside, it might be great - it might just be my inner fear of ebay / things that look "iffy" coming out too much!

From my side, I think it looks reasonable buy once you get a bit more information on the engine swap and length of ownership and why it has been used so little. I was going to mention the wheels tongue out but he says in the advert that he has 4 minilites with new ACBS10's on them so I expect he has put this pic in to show what it looks like with different wheels on.

The engine swap is more common than you think and the red top VX engine is an excellent one to use with readily available engine mounts and other parts from Caterham for the conversion as it will the same as the HPC model. Likewise with the twin webers, the 170 bhp output is right for the engine.

It is dry sumped and has an LSD which are both desirable and being a 5 speed de dion, it should be a good value car at this price

Suggest if you're interested that you give the seller, Richard Wilson, a call. He's a very nice, genuine guy, and will be happy to discuss anything you want to know about the car.

Although I haven't seen the car, it is also listed on my website here: http://www.hire7.co.uk/forsale.htm

All the best,

Willie

Ok some bits look a bit out of place but on the whole it looks promising. The conversion to VX seems to have been done using Caterham bits. I did the same to my car. IMHO the VX is the best engine in a 7. Worth looking at and if you can sort the niggles and straighten the spec out it would be worth more than the current pice and be an excellent car.

You need to be a touch more observant - look harder at the detail in the pictures!

What have I missed? It wouldn't be PH if someone didn't make a schoolboy error - was today my turn?

biggrin Yep, your turn (just too tempting not to comment!)!

Two different pictures show different styles of wheel, but you'll notice the Minilite style are shod with ACB-10s - this can be seen from the side view and is stated in teh text. However the frontal 3/4 view shows the front tyres to be of matching tread pattern, so obviously not wearing the Avon's when the picture was taken!

The spare was more typical of Sevens from the late '80s, but "may" be original fitment to the car (1993)?

mine has a vauxhal redtop engine in it, and can honestly say that they are a good combination. I wouldnt be put off by it being off the road for years on end at the end of the day alot of caterhams are same way been lay up in garages most of there life. Especally when engine conversions etc are done. looks like a genuinely good car! my advice go have a look whats the worst that can happen you dont have to buy it!

good luck with getting one!

OP,

It appears my initial cynicism may be too cynical - as above, the photos must be from different days, because the rubber changed =)
Also, a poster above seems to know the bloke, so with that in mind, if the car is straight 9k might just be a steal!

Sorry that I got it wrong, but my old man tought me that if it looks cheap, and isn't bombproof kosher, you've probably been seen coming. No malice in saying look carefully, it was mere gut mistrust =)

Agreed! I think it is a good'un.

However, having discussed the possibility with my far better half, she reminded me of an incident a few years back involving ebay, a couple of bottles of wine, my credit card and a slightly rusty red V8 powered Italian car.

... and for that reason, I'm out!
