Can anyone recommend a third, LED brake light suitable for mounting on the rear of the roll-bar?

All the ones I've seen seem to be designed for internal use - stuck to the inside of the rear window.

Also, to save me looking, is there any way to feed the wires from such a light inside the roll-bar? Are the ends of it open and where do they terminate?

I've got one of these: http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/48-led-third-brake-ligh... coupled into lighting system on my 2007 SV with one of these: https://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product_info.php?p...

Works very, very well.

I know that the lighing sub loom is easier to it in the SV due to the slightly larger dimensions, you will (as I understand it, need small hands on an S3)

You may want to call Caterham to make sure the loom will work in your one before purchase as I see you's is a spot older than mine.

Took about 15 mins time to fit and test.

There are many, many threads on BlatChat along the sae lines biggrin

Cheers

I got one from e bay for about £12, actually a rain light with 50 LEDs in it.
Get the sub loom from Caterham(about £8 ISTR), some heat shrink & a resistor from Maplins & away you go.
Took about 45 mins to do the whole job start to finish.

Excuse my stupidity, but what does the sub loom do, exactly?

You plug it straight into the existing connector & it gives you the connection to wire straight into your new brake light to save the shag & hassle of finding the feed & then having to bodge/craft a connection with scotch locks or whatever.
The loom connection is on the N/S rear between the petrol tank & wing - I managed to take the large grommet out of the wing pull it through & snap the connector in place. It's a doddle to do, honestly, & I am one of the least patient people I know!!

I used a Hella Slimline brake light from Car Builder solutions and I am very pleased.

http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1p6l2/CarBuilderS...

I have mounted it to the roll bar with double sided tape and it is very bright - ideal for a Caterham smile

If you use the Caterham 3rd brake light wiring loom it is very simple to wire.

I've mounted one of the Hella strips on one of the cross braces on our FIA bar.

Here it is on the CBS site
Is that the one you got Dom?

I highly recommend it. Very bright and a superb package.

The recent looms seem to have a pair of receptacles on the rear lighting room for just this purpose. I just ran the cable down to those and used blades straight into them.

I used the same one as Dominic - probably the thinest available on the market which is ideal for the roll bar.
The Caterham loom is male and female sockets with around a meter of extra lead attached to wire to the new light - simply unplug the existing rear light (I used the one on the off side) then plug the new loom to the old feed plug, and the original light plug into the other loom connector. The extra lead is then simply a +12v and an earth. Only works with the later (post 96) type plug connectors, not the earlier "bullet" type.

On the assumption that you can't thread the wire through the down tube of the roll bar, how do you hide it? Or don't you?

Black tape? The odd zip tie?

On my 7 i've zip tied the LED module to the underside of the roll bar between the two down struts, the cable is then zip tied to the top of the right hand (as you stand behind the 7 looking forwards) down strut and another zip tie at the bottom just before the bolt that anchors it to the boot.

The question was in relation to "hiding" the wire but from the response it would appear that to "camouflage" it behind black tape seems to be the common answer. I was just curious to know if anyone had succeeded in actually hiding it from view within the roll bar down tube but it would appear not.

I have just hidden mine behind gaffer tape - it really isn't that noticeable if you run it down the back of the tube.

I am sure someone has run it down the inside of the roll bar, but I can't find it on blatchat as the search function still isn't working properly.

I ran mine inside the roll bar.
Amid cries of "you're doomed" etc for reducing the structural strength of the roll bar, I decided that a 4mm hole adjacent to one of the braces wasn't likely to make a lot of difference if it came to being upside down and hoping the bar does it's job.

Mine is the cross braced "FIA" bar from caged. Cable enters next to the light, down the inside of the bar, and exits through a hole in the base plate the closes the end of the bar at one side of the boot. I drilled both holes with the bar in situ on the car and used a "wet noodle & retriever" (American for ball-chain and magnet) to fish a draw wire through. Bit fiddly but results in a neat job.
Sub loom wasn't available when I did mine but I'd use one of those if I was doing it again.
