Hi, I am soon upgrading my 1600 crossflow on my Caterham 1996 model live axle (ital LSD) and was thinking of installing wide track on the front for better grip on our slippery roads here in Malta. Can anyone please tell me if the wide track fits on my chassis? Thanx

I depends on the specific chassis you have, but the short answer is yes

You need to buy some conversion brackets for the top wishbone.

Do Caterham supply these brackets? Also do you have any idea how much wider the wishbones are then the standard? Thanks for help

Caterham do sell these brackets singly (and you need the pair) or as a kit with the ARB as the live axle version is not compatible. Not sure on the exact extra width but certainly 2" at least per side

cheers Tango, now i need to make up my mind on the engine, either a semi race crossflow or just upgrade to a zetec.

No problem. How about a BEC conversion... or failing that I know where there is a very nice steel Xflow that is going to be put up for sale if you are interested?

yes i am interested, if you can send me the engine spec it would be great. Ye i know it's a kind of a project to put the zetec in and i hardly have the time to drive the 7 at the moment let alone a project.....but i want more POWER!!!

Hi Liveaxle,

I have asked the owner to stick the details of the Xflow up for you or maybe he will send the spec by email direct

Hi Liveaxle,

The engine was taken from my Caterham 7 earlier this year and was running brilliantly. It is a 1700 Xflow with a steel crank (12 bolt), forged pistons, steel rods and ultralight flywheel etc. It has a big valve head with titan roller rockers and runs a fairly hairy cam (probably an A6). The engine will be complete with dry sump system, electronic ignition and dizzy and the matched twin Weber carbs (50s!). Phil Jones (www.PJED.co.uk) built the short engine and looking at the spec of this engine on his current website, this little lot produces around 185bhp and is certainly a lot quicker than my 170bhp Zetec engine that has been dyno’d to confirm its output.

This steel Xflow is a ready to use engine and the cost to buy just the bits from the Burton catalogue is £6.5k. I’d prefer to sell the whole package as one and believe that 50% of the Burton price is right so I’m looking for £3,250. If there is enough interest, I would consider splitting the engine for its parts but that would be a real shame as its such a good unit.

If you need any more info let me know. byebye

Hi Capman,

That's one hell of engine you have there, but i'm not looking for a full race spec. 2 reasons: I only use the car on the road here. We have no tracks. Also, my 7 has got an ital live axle with a quaife lsd and i don't think it can take that much power without breaking.

So i would prefer to look for an engine 140-150 bhp.
