Has anyone taken their 7 to "The Pod"?
Discussion
In a couple of week's time, VW Action will be occuring at Santa Pod. This will be the fifth (I think) year that I've been and, as always, it will be a right good laugh.
However, this will be the first year I won't be going in a VW; the Scirocco needs stuff doing to it and is up for sale anyway, so I'll be taking "Katie".
So, while I'm there, it would seem rude not to take her on the half-mile strip and see what she can do.
Anyone else given this a go and/or can anyone give me any hints or tips about achieving the best standing start?

the "k" is easier to get off the line as it doesn't produce it's peak torque untill further up the range.
Duratec is a lot more torquey so more wheel spin from the start.
Can't speak for other engine options.
lower the tyres pressures at the rear, and pump the fronts up a little, least amout of fuel and all junk out of the car.
If your going to be anal about it you could take the headlights off and no aero, take out the passenger seat, oh! and not eat for a week prior to the event.
the way to make a car go faster is add lightness!

Mine's a 1.8 K with (so I'm told) a "racing" clutch and lightened flywheel.pat the plumber said:

Losing the junk is a given, but thanks for the tyres advice.pat the plumber said:

Hey, let's not get silly. My mate, who I always go to Action with, has informed me that I may be up against a turbo'd Mk1 Golf Cabriolet, in a light-hearted "race".
Place your bets now...
Watching a Old mk1 golf last night on Eurosport doing a 9.9sec @150mph run, i'd be vary wary against betting anything valuable
Dave Edmunds old live axle car was as fast as most Caterhams have gone 10.1 @ 134mph, i'd be tempted to watch the golf go first to see what you are up against.

I did a best of 12.82 @ 111mph at a cold and damp Shakespeare County Racecway a couple of years ago. That was with 226bhp but on road tyres (Avon CR500s). I had wheelspin in every gear and it was all I could do to keep the car in a straight line. I am led to believe that the surface at Santa Pod is better and I think in the dry with my hillclimb tyres on I would get in the low 12s and possibly even a high 11.
With a standard K series I think you would be happy with a time in the 14s.
Some of the big power Duratec cars are easily in the 11s in the right conditions.

Me too. I was told it is a very sticky surface (so much so that it's been known to knacker high-powered 4WD transmissions) so I don't think traction will be an issue.I'm not at all competetive. I just don't want to lose.

I think you have a chance, as long as the Golf hasn't been totally set up and tuned to the max for the job!...
Good luck anyway, let us know how it goes....can't wait to find out!
Mike.
Just checked out you tube...mmm!
Pretty damn fast that thing, spinning all the way too!
