Looking for experiences of both series. I'm going to sell my R400 and replace with with a car suitable for these series. First hand it looks like you have a better chance of obtaining a place in roadsport b if you have a later car where this isn't an issue with super grads? Would megas be to competitive for someone who hasn't raced before?

Thank you

I haven't raced in either series but I do follow them quite closely. Roadsport B is for Ford Sigma engined cars and the vast majority of entrants are normally from the previous year's Academy series. Supersports are also Sigma engined cars but upgraded. Roadsports A are older (2001 to 2007) Rover K Series powered upgraded Academy cars.

Supergrads run classes for both K Series and Sigma engined cars so you can race any standard Academy car from 2001 to present with just a change of tyres. There are other car modifications allowed in the regs, mostly with a view to improving reliability. Megas are basically upgraded Supergrads with more power and no windscreen/headlights.

Wherever you choose to race I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I can only comment first hand about the Grads (I race a "k" super) but you'll be hard pressed to beat the paddock atmosphere in the grads club

We're at Snet and Thruxton later in the year, pop over and say hello www.graduates.org.uk

What are you after out of your racing ?

F1 deal...

smile Im after some competitive racing and somewhere to learn the art as well as picking up some mechanical knowledge about cars and having a laugh. It looks like grads is a cheaper way to start(as the cars do not have to be nearly new)?

I passed my ards at thruxton last week. Do you know if Is it possible to race in grads without signing up for the season and to hire a car for one race?

I had thought about it but I'm not going to build the car myself so add on 2500/3000 to the price plus extras and then I think I was at 23.5 all in. Then there are something like 5 circuit races and sprints? For me it's not value for money as I'm only interested in the circuit racing. I think I'm going to do megas now.

Maybe I'll see you on a grid in a few years time when your done in academy.

Thought I might add as well, I'll soon be selling my race winning and championship runner upping Megagrad. It's located in Reigate, I just need to finish off a bit of tidying up on it before I sell it.

It's not got the best paint job but it is very well sorted and I'll throw in some instruction to get you up to speed! PM me if you're interested.

RSB is a one-season only deal, with a Sigma-engined car, designed for ex-Academists. If you can get a place in it, as prioroity is given to Academy drivers. And I haven't seen any Sigma cars under about £15k.

Supergrads is a mix of novices, really good experienced drivers and lots of middling people. And I believe (anecdotally from people who have done both) that the Grads Club is a friendlier and more helpful place to start racing. But I would say that as I am on the Board :-) and I think Caterham's race series have greatly improved since Simon Lambert took over running it.

We (the Grads) actually recommend people start racing in Classic Graduates, which is both the cheapest and dare I say cleanest grid we have. Cars start from about £7k. Ksupers start at about £10k. Either of these is way, way less than you would expect to pay for the Academy, but people who have done that tell me that the experience of everyone being novices together can't be replaced.

I started in Classics, have done both Supers and Megas and don't regret not doing the Academy as I never wanted to sprint or hillclimb. But you pays your money and makes your choice.

If I can help at all feel free to drop me a line - I am the "new drivers" person for the Grads Club.

Wouldn't rule out RSB unless you decide to spend less money or can't get on it. Guaranteed to be racing against people with only a bit more experience than you. No problem with the paddock atmosphere in Caterham series. This weekends Curry event was bang on with marshalls, mechanics, drivers, caterham and thats the second or third time thats been done this year. Go along to both and see what you like. Oulton Park is only a couple of weeks away for RSB.

thank you all for the help.

Im thinking about jumping in at the deep end and going into Megas(more race car is hows its been described) but thats not to say i wont start at SG. I have not crossed anything off the list except the academy.

Coy iv had a lengthy chat with Nick and if i was to find a car that MacM deem suitable and grads(you chaps) would let me id even try and get involved this year to take the pressure off of next year. Ill pm you.

Feel free to email, I've got a lot of new joiner info which explains the steps needed to start racing and the kinds of things to buy and where from. Happy to send it through. Andrew
