Hi, I'm new to this part of the PH world.

I saw a clip on you tube last night of some guy doing a slalom in his Caterham.

I was gobsmacked, the guy was flinging in around all over the place, it looked like a lot of fun.

Just thought I'd show my appreciation at the car.

Yes. It should all be on the Caterham website.

Edit: Here in fact: http://experience.caterham.co.uk/

Drift day is about the most fun you can have with your clothes on I reckon.

The Caterham crowd are very friendly and make the day a real fun day out.

Did silverstone with them last year and will do another before the autumn.

The Silverstone one is cheaper but is a bcensoredd to get to for me, need to use the M25 - feck that!

The Brands Hatch one is a possibility - will see if one of my pals wants to do it too.

There is one thing that's better ... doing the same with your own car.

My one slight complaint about the Caterham day (I did it before I got my car) was that you don't spend that much time actually in the seat. You can buy half a dozen worn tyres for the rear (fitted by onsite mobile fitter) and book yourself onto a drift day with someone like MoT for the same cost and spend hours pirohouetting away.

I did...

I can understand it being better in your car but i wouldnt want to ruin my car if the worst was to happen.

Plus i dont own a Caterham and this seems the best way to get the full on caterham experience.

Uness you are volunteering your car? wink

Whilst I fully agree with your sentiment Chris, there is the small matter of a £12k price differential.....

Do you have the (rare) Tyrrell P34 6 wheel option on your caterham then Chris?

only if i could have one as well as my current car, as i only drive weekends then that's quite unlikely.

I love the idea of building your own car though. Just not sure that i'd know where to start.

I started by buying a factory built example second-hand hehe It was my only car for 5 years though, so as you only drive at weekends...

biggrin

No, but I do seem to have the 'getting through a set of rears in half an hour option'.

I could be persuaded to do you a swap for the day! Very much missing my old TVR and always rather fancied upgrading to a T350.

On a slightly more serious note, although you might struggle to find cheap part-worn tyres to fit a T350, there's not much chance of damaging anything on a drift day. The only thing within 400 yards was the photographer and he looked like he'd bounce, plus it's all done at quite low speeds. The same goes for things like the Car Limits days at North Weald - only one person on the track at a time and vast run off areas (it's an old bomber base).

You're right though, that doesn't strictly address the not-being-a-Caterham issue.

On the website it says the day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 4pm - how much of that time are you in the car?

It costs £225 which isnt too bad really considering you dont need to worry about 2nd hand tyres, fuel or indeed ownership of a Caterham.

I did a drift day at Dunsfold last year. There were about 16 of us (from memory) sharing two cars (an S3 and an SV).

The action was split into several layouts of cones which you had to negotiate and you got attempts at each course, running against the clock.

Really good fun, learned how to donut, lots of tea, coffee and snacks. You don't ever get out of first and the instructor was reasonably patient.

Total time in the car over the day was realistically about 30 mins.

Yep, I'd say 30 minutes as a maximum.

If you haven't done a track day in the Tiv I'd urge you to give it a go. Find the right venue and there's nothing to hit; use a little discretion (and maybe only go for a shorter evening session) and the tyre wear needn't be huge; noise limits can be an issue, but go for a 'noisy' day (or fit some bolt-on silencers) and you'll be fine; plus you can get an instructor in to show you the ropes; plus you can get track day insurance. I really would urge having a go if it's not something you've done before...
