Did you have any problems getting the gearbox input shaft in when fitting the box? Are you certain that the clutch lever is butting up against the thrust race bearing and that the bearing itself butts up against the pressure plate?

Hi, the engine/gearbox go together no problem, the clutch kit came from a caterham dealer, the clutch arm travels about an inch about half the avaible distance before meeting the clutch, should the clutch release bearing be touching the clutch cover, thank you.

If the pressure plate is the diaphram type the release bearing should press against the vanes. When the clutch is pressed the bearing pushes the vanes towards the flywheel which releases the pressure on the clutch plate which in turn decouples from the flywheel. In that state the gear train is decoupled from the engine and you should be able to select any gear.

Have you put the arm back on the right way round?
(I did this once resulting in a record breaking engine removal and refitting session late one night...oh and a lot of swearing)

Hi, i did not remove the arm, i just clipped the new bearing on, question is why is there so much slack in the arm before the bearing touches the clutch cover.

The kit you got from the Caterham dealer. What did it consist of? From your previous response was it just the thrust race bearing? or the whole assembly, pressure plate, clutch plate and bearing?
Also, check that the actuating arm sits in its pivot lugs properly. If not it has no fulcram point from which it can apply lateral movement on the thrust race bearing to push the pressure plate vanes inward.

Yes, check under the pedal box. There is usually (but not always) a return spring to facilitate his. When the release bearing is touching the cover the pedal should be in the normal position

Hope this helps

Sorry I cannot help you with that. However, if you do have to get a new flywheel and you still use the old inertia type starter motor, consider a flywheel with the ring gear that enables you to convert to a pre-engaged starter.
