Went to Elvington today with the R400 - was not able to take part, as it measured 104.5db on the static test they run - limit is 98db static. Luckily, I got tested before paying!

Had a chat with someone who was using a Raceco Titanium silencer - he passed without problems - but it was not a Caterham.

Is there anyone on here using the Raceco silencer with an R400? If so, what was your before and after readings, as I may well have a go with one - but would prefer to hear a success story before the big spend!

Cheers, Bradders

before and afters depend on how little silencing material is left within your present silencer. Not a lot in yours by the readings ........

My duratec engined caterham records 94> 97 db @4500rpm@ 0.5m with my home made repackable silencer.

A new or a freshly repacked silencer of 6" diameter and 27" length should be able to get you down to circa 98db for a K series r400 and 95db for a duratec car.

Thanks Dave. The car is actually running with a 2.3L Duratec - and a non-standard silencer - I'm awaiting the paperwork from the previous owner to see what the silencer actually is.

All said though, it does sound from your answer that the Raceco may well do the job, and is worth looking at.

My k-series 400 was measured around 104 at Brands. There was a fairly large hole in the exhaust packing. Looking forward to the testing at Snet next week. I really do hope I can drop below the 100 mark....

I'd imagine that Ammo could give you a lot more details Bradders. If you are a L7Club member, PM him through there, if not, his website is here

http://www.raceco.com/

I've used his silencers for years - quality products. yes

Thanks all for your replies.

Dave - the car is back at work now - if I don't get chance to get pics today, I will take some and post them tomorrow. As an interim, the car was found from the classifieds on here - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1651947.htm - not sure if they will help, and the silencer has a cover over it.

Bradders,
You bought the car off my old man.
Just phoned him - It currently has the Caterham 5'' race exhaust.
To pass the SVA (meet noise limits) we fitted a Caterham CSR 7.5'' exhaust and that gave roughly a 90db reading.
Hope this helps.

Looks like the same exhaust as I had on my R500 Duratec.

It was measured at 106db at Oulton Park this year, so was too loud for most places.

Here is what I have fitted now, the same Raceco Titanium Silencer you were asking about.

I dont know the actual noise in db yet, but the car is now so quiet I can drive it without earplugs!!

I think it looks very nice too.

Nige, which length one is that you've got?

Got black flagged at Silverstone yesterday with my Caterham standard repackable box, 118db driveby... opps... same as a Le Mans car I was told by the laughing sound marshal.

Repacked the box and had another go, ended up having to have a 6k rpm max to be allowed on track as was still about 106db at that level.

Going to go the Raceco route now

Mine is the 750mm long Can, that's what Ammo at Raceco recommended.

Ammo seemed confident I could get my car down to 98db with it, but I have not measured it as yet.

The difference in overall noise is very notable, so I am very hopeful of a big reduction overall.

Ammo is a really nice guy to deal with too

Hope you get a result.

Cheers Nige.

Sent Ammo the images and measurements the other day - just waiting to hear back from him now. There's a bit of a backlog, due to the time of year, by all accounts. Hope he will be able to offer something similar - you're right, it looks spot on!

Out of interest, did you see / feel any performance change??

Cheers, Mark

Mark,

No worries, I had to wait for mine from Ammo for a while too, seems he is very busy all the time!!

Cant say I have noticed any real performance differnece so far, it does still pop too as before on the overrun, I put that down to a poor fuel map, which I will get sorted just like my old R400 K series on MBE ECU, with a good rolling road session.

The other thing that is surprising, is that although it is larger than the unit it repalces, it is actually lighter, which did surprise me a bit.

Its a beautiful piece of engineering too, very finely crafted!!

Cheers,

Nige.

Superb product, does exactly what's required of it without stifling power, as well as being very light & good looking to boot.........at a price!

Mike Riley (aka Metal Mickey) makes them for Ammo, fitting them in around ground up rebuilds of all sorts of classic exotica, clever & nice guy.

He re-furbed mine recently. It really is the men in sheds that keep this country running. Quality job.

I've got a CSR260 (also Duratec 2.3) with one of these fitted. Noise went from very load (but never tested) to 95db. With the original silencer (same as you've pictured) you couldn't even hear the induction noise! With the RaceCo fitted my induction noise is now louder than the exhaust when under load (so not on static tests).

If your engine has the roller barrel throttles you'll also want to consider an airbox if you want to go somewhere with a low drive-by limit like Bedford. Many places only do static tests though.
