Hi,

What tyres would people recommend for a fairly standard Roadsport A running 13" wheels?

Useage is probably 60% road 40% track and all-weathers, so I want something that's a good all-rounder. Handling is the most important thing (feedback and progressive breakaway), but a decent compromise between grip, wear and cost would be good. Can someone give me an idea of relative strengths and comparitive costs?

Cheers,

Chris

Probably worthwhile getting a spare set of wheels for track work. I run Yoko A021's on the road & currently have a set of A048s on my track wheels. When the 48's die I'll get some secondhand slicks.
I'm hoping to get a wheel rack along the lines of this made up so I don't have to rely on friends to take my wheels to the track.

With the dry sump system and everything I'd be tempted to go for slicks (or at least something track-orientated), but a lot of track days are mid week and unless you know someone with a decent sized car who's already attending it's going to be difficult to persuade anyone! Really it needs to be something I can drive on the road.

CR500s do seem to get the consensus but they're not cheap are they? I could swear you could get decent lowish profile 15" Michelins on my old MX5 for about £50. CR500s seem to be over twice that in 13". Ouch.

CR500 everytime...

And why do people think because it's a 13" it should be cheap, it's the lightest tyre available, works on road and track is and is custom made for the Caterham.

As for expensive... one rear tyre on my GT2 is the cost of a full set for the R500... and they last longer on the Caterham!

buying a seven for its performance and handling then running it on cheap tyres is like paying $1M to go on a date with Demi Moore then taking her to McDonalds.

Probably the best all rounder. You'll get twice the miles out CR500s than from A048s or R888s though the won't be quite as grippy on a dry track.

Fair point, but if it was a choice between Claridges and The Ivy I might start thinking about the bill to sway it. smile

I run my Cat daily and did 10K miles last year.

I have run Yoko 048's as I continued with what the car came with. I then went onto Toyo 888's which are a cheaper 48 to me. I now have 888's on the front and the Yoko 21's (wet tyre) on the rear.

I go through all weathers and all temperatures. I haven't done a trackday yet so it's all road miles.

Long story short, someone up there ^^^ said that CR500's last twice as long as my previously used rubber. How true is this? I haven't looked up any costs, but would I be saving money spending more in a sitting, but less time a year!!?!?!? Anyone done the maths/ experience before?

I didn't get much more than 2k miles from a set of A048s (soft fronts / medium rears) I haven't tried CR500s myself but friends inform me they should comfortably do double that mileage.

Demi Moore is very hairy! yikes Unless she's shaved her bikini line lately, I'd settle for a nice new set of CR500's. smile

Crap analogy - I wouldn't even be wasting money on McDonalds. She'd be getting whatever was in the fridge next morning!

No it's not - it's like paying $1M to go on a date with Demi Moore then not taking her :-)

They are much lighter than any other tyres, designed specifically for the Caterham, work well in wet and dry and produce near trackday special tyre levels of grip, have a smooth transition between grip and no grip and give the best feel through the steering of any tyre I've run on a Caterham as give sensible life both on and off track.

Apart from that, nothing much good about them ;-)

possibly because tyres for larger wheels generally cost lots more than tyres for small wheels? get a price for a 13 inch tyre and then try and get the same tyre in a 19inch or similar and check the difference in price for yourself.

just a thought of why people think it should be cheap if its small.

Too much grip like the 48's, ruin the car.

If people are looking that simplistically at the subject of tyres then they have no business classing themselves as pistonheads.
