If you were buying a new Caterham R300 what would you consider as 1) Essential Extras, and 2) Nice to haves??

Also does anyone know what charge a custom paint is? There are a couple of lambo colours I quite like.... (Arancio Atlas and Halcyon Midas)....

6 speed box
highest ratio LSD
removable wheel (can't recall if default or not)
cutoff switch
get an aeroscreen for racing days
13" wheels, not 14"
cig lighter wired in for electronics
FIA bar (can't recall if std or not)
no spare wheel
Emerald ECU (keep factory as a spare!)

custom paint was ~£500 more when I got ours done in 2002, think the invoice says £1,100 for it...

would be my submission at least...

The standard kit is:

Carbon dashboard
Caterham 6 speed gearbox
Ventilated front discs with four pot calipers
De Dion rear suspension with Watts linkage
Wide track front suspension
15” Anthracite Alloy Wheels with CR500 tyres
Carbon Fibre Cycle Wings
Black Pack
Composite interchangeable wind deflector
Composite Seats
Road 4 Point lap & strap belts
Quick Release Momo Steering Wheel

I would suggest 13 inch wheels, six point harness, and weather kit, and a nice piant job for a road/trackday car.

My 2p.

The R300 is pretty well specced so not many essential extras.
I would however definitely recommend the trackday roll bar - if it goes pear shaped, the standard bar won't help much.
If you are going to do a lot of track work then:
LSD
13" wheels (wider choice of track tyres and lower unsprung weight)
Possible dry sump (this was essential on the K series but I'm not so sure with the Duratec)
The Stack dash is a nice to have
If you aren't getting a windscreen then you might consider a full cage

For touring:
Windscreen/weather gear
Heater (it helps a bit on really cold days)

If you are tall (6ft plus) then consider the lowered floor

The Quaife ATB (sold on the option list as LSD) is a great match for the R300.
Lowered floors were essential for me, but YMMV.
Interchangable screens save you work after the fact, when you want to swap over for the track.
You might want to go for track harnesses rather than the clunk click ones if you want to add crotch straps later.
As mentioned the heater is pretty useful and I'd say the battery master switch is a nice to have.
We did go fairly mental on the options list, it has to be said.
Get an aluminium handbrake knob to match the gear knob. It's like vital! smile
