I've got a Durex R500 with 13" rims, so 6" front and 8" rear. Wanted to get a spare set for track days so I could keep tyre costs down by running slicks, and also using up my road tyres when they go past the legal wear limit.

What's the cheapest way of getting a set of rims (possibly including tyres) and what type do I need? I'm a bit loathe to get a set of rims+tyres from Caterham, will be the best part of a grand I think.

Off ebay, about £100, from Compomotive, about £50 each, but ring them direct and get a deal. This was a few years ago though!

Think I'm right in saying the Duratec has a 4.25"/108mm PCD, same as Ford?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get 13" wheels from an old-school Ford, Capri/XR2? Is there likely to be much of a weight penalty, and I wonder if it would actually affect your enjoyment of a track day.

Don't know about that, I've never seen anyone, with any different wheels to the normal, ie Superlites, Mike Barnaby, Caterham 8 spokes, or Compomotives. I do know, there is sometimes an issue with the rear wheels rubbing on the de-dion ears, which need a bit of fetling from an angle grinder, so I would think the offset of standard wheels would be wrong.

I have a Caterham (2000 Roadsport) and a pile of 13" Capri Wheels (Not all attached to cars). Would be happy to try some 13" wheels on a Roadsport if anyone was interested.

I will warn you that the 7 spoke 205 rims have a real tyre shortage issue. Laser Wheels are 185 so perhaps a bit too narrow ?

There have been various CXR bulk buys in the past - have a look at Blatchat via their search facility. Compmotive usually honour their bulk buy prices. I bought 2 sets last autumn in advance of racing my caterham.

Alternatively, places like Racecarsdirect, Motorsportads, Pistonheads (racing section of the classifieds) often have sets of wheels being sold off by racers. Also try a wanted ad in some of these places as this often flushes out those racing driver chaps with lots of gear in the garage!

It may not just be a case of using any old Ford PCD wheels - offset, big brakes caliper and de Dion tube clearance...

I ran some French Formula rears that I got for £150 pair inc slicks they were 9" and fitted perfectly and pretty light - can't remember the name of them though.

I also had a set of Formula Ford Revolution race wheels that were very light but needed spacers to get the front Calipers to clear. I used them as wets. They were 6" fronts 7" rears.

So there are cost saving options out there. Depends if you have the time to scan ads etc...

Thanks for the advice... I've sent an email to Compomotive and also someone on Blatchat selling wheels.

Where do people tend to get their slicks from?
