Given the choice of just three tyres with a size of 185/60/14, Yoko AO21s, Yoko AO48s and Toyo 888s, which of these would you say were best overhaul for road use only. The criteria being grip (including wet and dry) and wear (ie mileage). We know each one has it's own benefits but if you had to pick one set, which would it be, regardless of initial cost.

CR500's smile But out of the others, 48's or the 888's

As above CR500s but, out of the list, R888s would be my choice as they aren't as stiff as the A048Rs which tramline horribly. A021Rs are fine but not my choice.

On your criteria the CR500's.
I've used all but the 048's (had 008R's and 032R's though).

Where did the OP mention CR500's? confused
He's asking about 14 inch tyres. CR500's only come in 13 and 15 inch.

Or have I had too much beer tonight? drink

ETA I like CR500's too, in 13 inch. biggrin

We all missed the fact he has 14" wheels.redface
Nevertheless, for purely road use the CR500 is much better than the others and would be worth swapping to 13" wheels for (funds allowing) although this would probably require adjustable spring platforms. If it has to be 14" then I stick with my R888 choice. A021Rs are a fine tyre but the wet weather advantage is marginal and in the dry the R888 is better. Should the OP decide to do a track day then the R888 will definitely be the right choice. They do look cool too

I'd say for your 14" you'll be hard pressed to do better than the AO21's for all rounders. We had them on our SV for 4 years and except for tread noise, they did far better than the Medium Soft 48's we have on now.

I make the statements based on a lot of track days, several pan-European rallyes and the like. We put the 48's on just before moving to Oz and the 48's in a drier climate are pretty ok as they warm up better.

Now we're back in Blighty SWMBO doesn't yet know I'm going back to 21's. Only drawback is on our 200+ Bhp SV we go through a set of 21 rears every 6-8Kmiles but the fronts last 10-12k (bit of aggressive driving, me, never!) but the 21s are cheap enough compared to other tyres I don't mind.

:-) re the CR500's - missed that - teach me for speed reading / replying
14" 021's for road / wet focus or 48's/888's for dry road.

I swapped my CR500 rears for 888's to try them - so far I'm impressed.
The older 175 CR500's on the front (never seem to wear out) hang on very well against the 205 888 rears on the road. On track I would be understeering a lot I think.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for your input, I appreciate your help. I don't plan to go to the expence of changing to 13" wheels so it looks like I will probably go for either the AO21s or the R800s.

Just one more question and I know it's a bit like the proverbial length of string but on average what sort of mileage could I expect to get from the 888s if it's all road and no track with the odd spirited drive.

Thanks in advance.
