http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1604552.htm

I'm struggling with the 99miles only.

I suspect a quick call to Caterham Midlands with the chassis no & engine no will give you all the information you need.

From doing a bit of research on the car myself found out the following information, have no axe to grind or anything but might save someone time in checking it out.

The car was built from an R400 kit by Hyperion Motorsport originally to be used as a track toy for one of their clients (full details are difficult to get hold of as they are no longer there) and as such had a track Stack dash fitted to it and seemed that it took a while before it was road registered.

Since the current owner has purchased it the car has had work done by a specialist to add lots of carbon, paint, new bonnet as it air filter hole in it and a road stack dash fitted to it at this point so I'm guessing this is where the mileage comes from.

It is a short passenger floor chassis, has a sealed engine with tags as per race cars (don't know if this is normal for a road R400?) and has had the gearbox replaced.

From what I'm told by someone who has seen the car it is very clean and sharp and does look like a very low mileage pampered car.

The previous owner did throw a lot of money at the car - it spent a lot of time at Hyperion, but I can't remember whether it was completed before Hyperion ceased to be....something tells me it may have been finished off by someone else? If you really want to know, see if you can locate Steve Hindle through Westfield....he is bound to recall the car....

I'm not sure about the engine with tags though - don't forget that when the Eurocup guys moved onto Duratecs there were a lot of ex race, sealed K R400 engines hanging around.....some had just been rebuilt for the next season, some had not....Hyperion had around 6-8 complete engines and exhaust systems at that time....I have no way of knowing the provenance of that particular engine though, nor indeed whether it happens to have led any kind of racing life.

I E-mailed the the seller, as I believed the car had sold a few weeks ago, but he didn't come back to me. Then I tryed again and got a reply, some info about the car but also how he has a phone so doesn't like e-mail timewasters.Oh and the original buyer was a messer.I then suggested that although I may need an SV some std cars I've been able to fit in and as we were local to each other it would be worth me popping over to have a look/see.That was a week ago, I haven't heard anything again so I've given up. I'm sure this was up for sale a while back and was subject to a thread on here?

Certain parts on race cars (typically engines and gearboxes) can be sealed with MSA tags (which are like metal crimps) which make it very evident if the head has been removed by an unauthorised third party, or if gearboxes have been opened and had their ratios changed for example. Different race series will homologate different parts.

Been discussing this car with some fellow Caterham owners on another forum. I found this old advert that looks to be the very same car:

http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-pa...
advert said:
The car is all brand new apart from the engine which is from a 2004 R400 and has been fully rebuilt by minister power who built the R500 engine so know what they are doing.
Rightly or wrongly, that certainly reinforces suspicions about the engine's probable previous life.
