Hoping to get my car back on the road this weekend. I've recapped on all the insurance quotes (Richard Egger, Competition Car, Flux, Footman James and MSM). They broadly fall into two groups: road cover only, where most come in at about £370 for 5,000 miles, and those with 4 or 5 track days thrown in for free at £450 or so. One quoted me circa £370 for road cover but wanted £105 for each track day, which struck me as a bit steep.

I hope to do about 4 track days over the year so it sounds like a bit of a no-brainer. But is there anything to consider before I just go for the cheaper of the two track day inclusive quotes (in this case Ricahrd Egger)?

I guess there's also mileage - I could drop it down to 3,000 and save about £100.

Do you really think people can give you an answer on mileage you're going to make? smash

My car did roughly 3.000 miles in 7 years. I did three times as much within 6 months. biggrin
Not sure how it works in Uk, but you might be able to pay a bit extra if you exceed the 3k mark. That's how it works here.

Okay, yes, it was slightly moronic of me asking that. Last year I did lots of miles in the first few weeks of 'new toy syndrome' and then it ended up being layed up for several so it's quite difficult to predict.

I'm waiting to hear back from one last quote - Caterham Insurance - but I'll probably go with the cheapest 3,000 mile a year trackday inclusive quote with a view to upgrading later if I need it. I think they'll do that, but I'll check before taking anything out.

The main question was the value of track day cover. If someone had turned round and said you can cover one of track days for a tenner somewhere then it wouldn't be worth paying a premium for a policy that already includes it, but I have a suspicion that five inclusive track days for £100 extra on the premium is better than you'll get paying for them seperately.

I've just changed to Eggar from Hagerty. The overall premium with Eggar is the same as last years premium with Hagerty. But with Hagerty on top of the premium they we charging 10% of annual premium for each trackday. So Eggar looks good value. Except above 4 trackdays, the cost will be circa £70 a trackday.

I went for Egger in the end too. One of the cheaper quotes full stop and it includes track days.

So... hope to have the car back on the road in the next week or so. Next step is to see whether I can persuade the DVLA that my 2009 registered ex-racer doesn't need an MOT. That or a very friendly emissions tester. driving

Think I struggled to cover 1500 miles in the last 12 months.

Car is insured for 3000 miles p.a. thru' Adrian Flux - works out about £160 p.a. - mind you it is only a 'baby' 1.4 K series...

Lucky for me, I kept my 98 chassis, so just keep upgrading that car, so visual smoke only at MOT time smile

I never thought about that when looking at cars to buy! With daily drivers I am stingy enough to consider the tax break on pre-2001 cars so maybe there's another thing to consider! smile
