Was going to replace the standard 80's look gear knob on my SLR with the 6 speed caterham alloy gear knob available from their website. As it stated on the website it suits 3/8" thread (most cars). Low and behold on removing the old gear black plastic gear knob the exposed threaded bar was too large in diameter for the alloy gear knob.

I have seen SLR's with alloy gear knobs on them in classifieds, this one is a late 2000 car so must of been one of the latter ones. Any ideas if caterham changed the size in later SLRs to suit the current 3/8" standard or have owners been sourcing a compatible gear knob elsewhere?

any ideas from SLR owners? apart from drilling and tapping the gear knob i have from caterham....

Check that's not a adaptor on the end of the shaft - mine had a larger thread screwed onto the narrower thread beneath.

Does yours have the C quickshift. Possible not and just has a std ford gear lever which would/should have a small extension whcich not only extends the lever but also converts the thread to the larger type

I just removed with considerable force (i had a hold of the gear lever underneath the extension so as to not impart any torque into the gear stick itself though) something that looks very similar to that part. All's well now, got the new alloy gear knob on.

I had to do that too with some very tight mole grips and a few judicious taps with a lump hammer. Glad it's all sorted now thumbup
