Just about to buy another car for the business and we're going for a 1.8 SV K series - we have a choice of cars - five or six speed. Thoughts??

We like the six speed on our supersports but guess 5 speed for a touring style car would be better.

Grateful for advice.

Cheers

Scott

6.

Never found the 5 speed good for touring anyway.

I spoke to dominic regarding this the other week, he made the point that most 6 speeds are pulling about 4-600 rpm more at 70/80mph than the equivilent 5 speed...

I'd go 6, your customers will apriciate the closer gearing

Thanks. If I go for six it means another yellow car but then again, customers seem to really like the Supersport and it's very visible. The silver car is five speed.

If your customer has chosen to hire a Seven over (in the nicest possible way) more civilised options, then it's fair to assume they want a raw, adrenaline-packed experience, so I'd go for the 6-speed every time. To me it just suits the Seven better. If you have the full complement of ratios I'd also consider looking at a 1600 - it feels racier than the 1.8 in standard tune even though it does concede a little low-down torque.

If you were looking to cross continents - and god knows why any sane person would do that in a Seven - then the torquey 1.8 and the 5-speed 'box may be more relaxed, but I presume there are more suitable cars they could hire if they wanted that?

The 6 speed is a lovely snickety box. Drove my R300 from CC to Mallorca, on mainly Autovia roads, no problem.

6 spd. Great close ratio box.

As an aside, the new Audi A8 has an 8 spd auto box!

6 speed every time! The gearing is much better and it has a nicer rifle-bolt feel when engaging.

Spot on all. Have gone for the six speed. So we now have a top spec 1.6 Supersport and a 1.8 SV, both six speed.

Gutted to see our Gulf livery Supersport car go but I'd done that classic "buy for myself rather than the business" routine and the extra space of an SV will be welcome. Hopefully best of both worlds now.

Cheers

Scott.
