Go for it. K-series R500 possibly the best sounding caterham EVER!!! biggrin

(not biased at all of course whistle )

..but seriously - the k series have their little niggles but the pops bangs and sheer revs you get out of them blow away the duratec's for pure noise!

no engine work but only 3k miles, but tricky to know where those miles have been done i suppose ....

am think price a little high too, but what can you really get for mid 20s for this much fun, just sold my nissan r34gtr v spec, so this could be a v cool replacement...

Have you driven or owned a Caterham before? You don't need wild spec to get super-fun. When I sold my kr500 I bought a 1600ss and had much more fun in it than in the r500.

Yep, have driven few times, not owned, am sure you right in truth... Just the sound and madness of a r500 illogical , mad but tempting all the same I suppose

Bought my first Caterham about a year ago and that was a R500 on a 2000 plate, private sale, paid £22k and it had covered about 7500 miles, it worried me to death at the time. I did the same as you are trying to do by contacting previous owners and getting the history from them and it all turned out to be true, mainly road miles and a couple of track days. Still worry about when I should have the engine re-built and who to take it to. Will probably run it this year and have something done next winter, now done about 10k. For all the worries, when you get in and drive it they soon fall by the wayside due to its blistering performance.

Only one place to take it to if you want the best service for a reasonable price - Dave Andrews (DVA power). He has rebuilt mine twice now.

Nothing wrong with the engine and in fact it was in great condition. I had the engine rebuilt as I wanted to increase the bore to increase capacity and try new cams. The previous rebuild was at 9k and the this was again performed to increase its performance with some choice modifications.

Both rebuild were probably not necessary but the first one was done before my ownership and I wanted to get the engine fully inspected and took the opportunity to upgrade at the same time:-). It was 257bhp so looking forward to the rolling road session post upgrades.

I think the key thing with the R500 is making sure it is properly warmed, its rev limit has been set at the lower level of 8600rpm and the oil level is aways checked, including throughout the track day. Failures have occured in the past mainly due to oil starvation and the original rev limit was set too high at 9200 rpm.
