used K for the price of a new Durex ?

has the K series become some sort of collectable uber-expensive faberge egg type antique ?

Rich, I think asking price and selling price may be different in this case!

Don't you get stiffed on the options - paint, stacked dash, composite seats, black pack, roll bar etc etc..?

Could be looking at up to 35k new iirc.

edited to add - 24k still looks expensive above :-)

If only . . .

My R400 went in to the 30K and didn't stop. I thinks a conservatively spec'd R400 Duratec with paint and weather kit will be in the low 30K's

It doesn't matter..

The point is, even if you want to spec your R400 up (personally id rather be forced to have the basic unpainted car rather than any used K series car)... it will still only be a few thousand more which in the scheme of things is sweet FA, especially when you consider that you are getting a brand new car to your spec and colour, with a duratec engine with the new chassis, versus a K series car that is secondhand and you'll be the third owner (K series is VASTLY inferior to the duratec). Look at it this way: Unless 1) you literally reached your last penny in the world at 28k, or 2) you're a complete bufoon, you just wouldn't do it would you. Or would you ?

You seen to have a large aversion to the K series engine. Whilst the Duratec is a much more modern and also stronger design, a well built K series can greatly improve upon the unit which was originally designed by Rover. Have you any actual experience of a DVA K? (I've heard mixed reports regarding Minister units)

the cars are not being *sold* for 28K, the owners are simply asking for 28K ?

been around a while, trackdays since 1993, know whats what, owned 3 K series engines, driven all sorts.. it was all a long time ago now and the game has moved on considerably

not against it per se, it was a fab solution at the time, but nowadays if the price differential is so little (as im very clarly illustrating here) then its a no brainer.. especially if you get a brand new car + metric chassis thrown in for free !

Rich, I know your car history, as your personal site is very well put together and very informative, but it was your comment re the engine that I was surprised about. I still maintain that if you've only experienced 'stock' K series, then yes, their longevity *may* be questionable......

Yes, agree that the Duratec is a 'better' engine using most metrics available! I'd like an 8500rpm 2l D, but am sorely tempted to chop in the SLR and go Radical racing instead!

Just doing a few sums for fun, I got to 35,680 on the D version to s similar spec. I couldn't find a price for competition spec dampers, some of the carbon stuff (non-caterham), quick release wheel.

So to get to the equivalent spec DR400 built for you new, you'd end up with a good 36.5k.

So secondhand 2 owner seemingly pretty much unused k version for 24k
New factory built D version 36.5k.

Yer pays yer money...

The K series is a beautiful engine, cracks and pops and just oodles character and makes me a smile, not so sure a duratec has the same je ne sais quoi, saying that my next 7 will be a duratec though for sure.....progress

28K yikes too much IMO.

CC have had two DR400's go through for £28'500 and £29'995 in the past two months. The K-series car certainaly look clean enough though but probably 4k over?
