Is there a rule of thumb in terms of when an engine needs 'refreshing' for an R400 in particular. The car has been serviced very 3000 miles or yearly whichever comes sooner and is currently on approx 11K thanks for any advice

It's dry-sumped right? don't worry...even wet sumped SLR engines are happy to go over 20k miles...

How much track use compared to road use? How hard have you pushed the engine? K-series or duretec? How often has the oil been changed? Has it been over reved? Whats the maximum coolant and oil temperatures seen (any over heating)? Any significant oil or coolant losses? Has the engine always been up to temperature before being put under any stress? Has the power output dropped noticeably over time, has emissions and engine noise levels changed or has anything else noticeably occurred which could be a warning sign of a bigger bang on the the road and from your wallet in the near future? With these considerations known the engine specialist would have a better idea of servicing / refresh intervals.

Thanks for the replies, yes it is dry sumped, as far as I know (knowing the previous owner) the car has been meticulously looked after, I will take the advise of a specilaist when it next goes for a service but by the sounds of it it shouldn't need anything major done to it. Ta
