I spoke to a guy at the caterham showroom a year ago about entering the caterham acadamy. Unfortunately i'm 6'8" and fairly long in the leg so it would have required a bit of fabrication to get me into the SV chassis let alone the smaller cars they use for the acadamy.

He said there had been some talk of introducing a SV acadamy car for 2011. Has this been delayed of was it just an idea drifting on the wind?

I'd appreciate any info from anyone with insider knowledge

I suspect unless he got 37 mates of similar build before phoning, they're not going to be interested :-(

it's a big gamble for them to add another grid just for SV's, and I can't see them ever mixing an SV/S3 grid. shame though!

Just out of interest, have you sat in a car adjusted for a tall person with a lowered floor and no seat?

I'm over 6'5" and quite long legged (and large) and I managed to slot myself into narrow bodied cars with ease and comfort for the 4 years I raced Caterhams. The only difference was I needed a foam bag seat, rather than a tillet. There wasn't much foam and my backside was on the deck, but I wasn't any higher in the car than anyone else!

I tried a SV chassis with a cloth seat and had I removed the seat rails and/or moed the wheel up an inch / moved the pedal box back a bit I might have got in.

The problem is most car's are built assuming a maximum height of 6'4" (some to 6'6") anything above these hights is an unknown. I may have to head back to the showroom when I next head over to maidstoneLookwhati'vefound, forexexpert

Forget the showroom you need to try a car with a bag seat which you aren't going to get in a showroom

Find your nearest gradutes race and go along and chat to some racers and see if you can have a sit in a car with no seat as if you can get in without a seat then a bag seat can be made to suit you

Also the pedal box has 3 settings (well mine does) and most cars are on the middle setting

As it happens I know a few friendy (if quirky) Grads racers who live in Farnborough and Camberley. Drop me a PM if you'd like to be put in touch, I'm sure they'd be happy to help you out!

As said, you need to sit in a car with no seat and the pedals on the furthest position before you make your mind up

Have a word with Caterham Midlands in Leicester - they focus more on the motorsport side than the Caterham South showroom and can possibly get you sat in an Academy car with bag seat, lowered floor panel and pedals adjusted accordingly.

Its a few years since i went there but those guys used to know absolutely everything about the Adademy and the cars because they do the race support for it at all the events.

Still, 6'8" scratchchin....hmmmm, they'll probably get you in to the car but it'll be whether you can get out again!!

Had this problem at the last london motorshow - I got into the lotus... then realised my legs were jammed and took about 10 mins getting back out to the ammusement of onlookers :P
