Diff acting strange...
Discussion
We had a squeak from the rear of the Caterham which we were sorting today (some joints were a bit stiff). We checked out the usual bits to try and find out where the squeak was coming from, pushing on various bits then checked the diff.
We have a normal diff that comes on a roadsport, (not LSD) and we couldn't turn the rear wheels in opposite directions - no slip at all.
Rubbish description I know, but can anyone let us know what is up (is it a problem?) We did have a front end crash last year, although it shouldn't have affected it..
Thanks for any help

For an open diff, you can hold one wheel stationary and its possible to turn the other. For an LSD, both wheels turn the same direction i.e if you hold one wheel and try and turn the other, the one you are holding will try to turn the same way. You shouldn't be able to turn the wheels in opposite direction if I understand your description correctly

ok, It is acting like a LSD, but it isn't.when I turn one wheel one way, you can't hold one still, it get's turned in the same direction.
Pretty sure that didn't used to happen..

Hi Gorge, if your diff is as you say and it is not an LSD then I would think that the sun and plant gears are not working correctly.
To prove this I would lift up one side of the car and try and turn the wheel useing a 41mm socket on the hub nut.If the car tyres to move froward then the sun and plant gears are in trouble. If the wheel turns with a bit of effort then you have an LSD fitted.
If none LSD then out with the diff for further examination.

Are you sure it didn't act that way before? It's not unheard of for Caterham to fit the wrong bits
Mine had a LSD that neither of the previous two owners were aware of. Donuts at Dunsfold proved it. I think that it needs new rear A-Frames anyway..
