Assuming someone uses a cam locking tool and doesn't need to retime the cams, I think 1 hour labour, plus the parts cost should suffice.

the cam belt is around £30-£40, the tensoiner (use a manual, not automatic one) about £30 and any sundries will be around £30. I reckon about £150-£200 tops.

Why not do it yourself? You can get a draper K series cam locking device for about £5. It's literally fitting parts. There is no 'setup' involved (other than perhaps correctly setting the cam belt tension)....

I had mine done at CC Mids a couple of years ago and it was about £100 IIRC.

At that price all up (assuming a new tensioner has been fitted), I'd get someone else to do it rather than get your own hands dirty.

It's a bit more involved (only another half an hour) if you've got an apollo tank. but yes fairly straight forward. The only thing to be aware of is that unlike most belt changes you set the flywheel 90deg from TdC rather than at TDC. A locking tool isn't essential as at this point in the engines cycle teh cams aren't likely to move around of their own accord

ETA belt kit inc tensioners £60

A thread that brought me back down to reality - having been toying with the idea of an Italian - a Gransport or two seater (355 or 360) ... and reading such as this:

"I have had my 360 for just under a year and done just over 4500 miles and so far has not cost a penny other than petrol.
In the next month or so i will be getting a 6000 mile service done with cambelts £1100 approx and have orderd a new pair of tyres for the rear toyo £360 for the pair
i have just looked back all the old servicing recipts 9 years 35000miles including tyres and brakes and 1 clutch is averaging £1823 a year."

To which add the V signs, keying, insurance... a return to my original idea of a C'ham seems entirely rational and probably a lot more fun.

Never had any hassles with keying, insurance etc with mine. And go in with eyes open and running costs shouldn't be a surprise.

The Caterham is a great, great car. Especially bang for the buck. HAve had mine 13-14yrs and can't see me ever selling it.

But if you have the funds, some Ferraris are at least their equal in the "worth it" stakes.
