Is "Blatchar" down at the moment? I'm currently getting a "site not available" message.

Looks like it - I can't get in either.

Perhaps they've implemented the 'members only' policy without having any members.

Blatchat is up - just been on there myself, but it appears that there is a problem connecting to it for a lot of people.

Currently NTL are experiencing severe problems on their network. While basic IP connectivity seems to be there DNS and HTTP at least are totally shafted. As far as I can tell there are two, possibly connected, reasons for this outage.

First it would seem that one of the major trans-Atlantic fibres has been cut. This is causing mayhem with traffic routing and network congestion, however the internet is designed to cope with this kind of thing so all should be well if a tad slow.

Secondly, and perhaps more pertinent, I have heard on the grapevine that as part of a hacker competition called "the loft" the DNS and other servers of key UK ISP such as NTL, Blueyonder, BT, Demon, Pipex and Freeserve have been targeted with massive Distributed Denial of Service attacks. This more than likely explains the lack of DNS and HTTP traffic from NTL.

The combination of the two factors seems to have conspired to cripple NTLs network and deprive us of the services we have come to take for granted.

There is an issue with Blatchat DNS - the record has been marked as expired and this is currently updating caches round the Internet. For anyone still able to access it, could they do an 'nslookup www.blatchat.com' for me so that I can get the (cached) IP address?

I've spoken to Barry who runs the Blatchat service and he's looking into it.

I can still get it, what would you like doing, bearing in mind I'm not an IT type?

Open a MS-DOS/Command window (assuming you are running Windows).

At the prompt type:

C:> nslookup www.blatchat.com

You should get something like:

Server: ns0.test.machine.com
Address: 10.160.13.21

Name: www.blatchat.com
Address: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

It's the number that replaces the X's that I'm after.

yip Im banished too.

So whats all this members only business ive been noticing on Blatchat lately? I dont really go to the forums that much- (seen a few catering van owning PHers on there tho) but have been lurking on the site for a bit & keeping an eye on the for sale one for a fair while & have seen odd things about the members only thing included in some members sign offs & wondered what it was all about?
