DVLA looking at modified cars and retro issuing a Q plate?
Discussion
Has anybody heard about this? Looking at another forum they suggest that if you have modified the chassis in any way so it is not to original specification and DVLA find out they can inspect and re register your car with a Q plate.
I dont know to what extent the modifications need to be but it is worrying if true. I was thinking about getting back in to sevens after being without for 2 years with a basic old shed then modifying and re building in to a bike engine car. This would obviously involve chassis modifications so might fall in to the same category that requires re registering and a Q plate.
Any information about this?

It seems that up until recently the normal rules did apply but not necessarily any longer. The report was on blatchat and basically said that there were two Caterham owners who were having there cars investigated by DVLA who had gotten the evidence they needed from the owners own website. The owners concerned had gone into great detail on there website about what mods they had done to the cars and as a result DVLA were going to inspect the cars and possibly re register with a Q plate.
Ive found it here take a look.

I was wondering if anybody else in the kit car world has been affected by this.
Scary if its true.

You might be right GM. Ive just found this on google
"Seemingly my car is under investigation by the DVLA so sorry, but I have had to take the website down."

Q2RUM doesnt really have the same ring to it does it. Hes been trying to sell his car for a long time and this wont help. Back to more serious matters though if the DVLA succeed in re registering that car it does have potentialy serious consequences for any kit car owners who like to develop and modify there own pride and joy. I might have to re consider my own plans until it is sorted out.

So asides from having easier MOTs and you can't have a prat plate could someone explain the exact problem of having a Q plate is?
If your paperwork supports exactly what the car is then why get all bothered about a small piece of plastic that is on the front of the car
From my limited knowledge, Q plates bring with them a stigma. People prefer to buy an age registered car and therefore I think a Q plate can take a slight toll on the resale value. If your paperwork supports exactly what the car is then why get all bothered about a small piece of plastic that is on the front of the car
I think the emissions are tested differently on an MOT and you can't have a private plate with a Q.
Reading the thread on blatchat it appears to suggest the car may need to be SVAd and re registered. I would think its the SVA for an older car that is the more difficult issue rather than not being able to have a prat plate. Although a Q plate is often thought to place a lower value on the car as well.
It will be interesting to see what happens in this particular case for many reasons. I bet hes gutted.

Somewhat of a worry.
Although the OP in the Blatchat thread is never shy of making mountains out of molehills, and thinking they are the sole arbiter in mountain/molehill identification decisions. So I take the whole "shush, they are all out to get us" tinfoil hat stuff with a pinch of salt.
Where is Mr. Webb when you need him ?
