Right,
Im into my off roading and also love caterhams.
I was planning to build an off road rally car based on a discovery 1 with a Rover 3.5 EFi V8 (already bought). Since then I have just been to silverstone classic show and for the second time, passengered a Lotus 7.
Well what can I say, awesome fun!
Now I can't decide, do i build my original idea, or go for a caterham. Firstly I need some advice, guidence and information, not being the most mechanically minded....
So I already have an engine, could this be squeezed into a caterham? (with some engine mount changes i imagine) and if so, with what gearbox and from what car? I already have 2 geaboxes, a 4 speed ZF auto and a 5 speed LT77, obviously both from land rovers, which are usually mated to a transfer box. Probably meaning it couldnt be used with a 2 wheel drive caterham? Any Ideas?
Also, im a student currently on placement living at home, so i have some money! However in total I would like to keep my project within about 6 grandish :-) . Would this be at all possible?
If what I have said or thought is total rubbish! feel free to say, I wont take it personally as im still learning.
Thank you very much for you help

forget your ideas of putting land rover engines (except k series from freelanders!) into caterhams and also stick with ford gearboxes, diffs etc.
£6k will buy you some kind of caterham that already works.
Inevitably doing it yourself, costs can easily spiral but in theory, if you get a cheap chassis, a k series for less than £500, a sierra gearbox & diff for £100 then it's possible but I would recommend buying a built one and leave your self building to the land rover.
If £6k doesn't quite get you a caterham that you fancy then consider a westfield. It will certainly be better than a caterham with an old v8 and LR gearboxes & diffs in it. And, you can enjoy it now rather than 3 years down the line.
