Funny question I know, but I am having problems with my nearly new R400. When I am giving it stick for a period of time ie 20 seconds or longer, all of a sudden it will start to smoke blue clouds. Not always bad, but sometimes bad enough to leave a big embaressing trail or sometimes just a massive cloud with a misfire.

Having spoken to Caterham midlands that supplied the car, he reckons the only thing it could be is the breather system plumbed in wrongly, so if anyone has any pics of the engine bay, hopefully i could compare it to mine!

Anyone else any other ideas???

TIA
Steve

Make sure it is not over filled with oil. Have a look under the inlet plenum and see if the outlet has a tube on it or a rubber cap.

It is literally just above minimum on the dipstick, measured it several times now to be sure, hot and cold.

I've found a diagram on caterhams website and the rocker cover is correct, but now need to check the crankcase breather. Anyone know where this should be going to?

Something's not right and I've got a track day on 18th, so really concerned I won't be finishing the day the rate it's going! Due to being in the Isle of Wight, Caterham really are not being very helpful at all. Time to start shouting a bit more me thinks!

Steve,

I'd go for the overfilling with oil; partly because Mic knows what he is talking about and partly because I've had a similar experience with my car. I thought the oil level was down a little and added some ( only a small funnel full) and was witnessed pushing out smoke on right hand bends. I was somewhat paranoid about running the oil low based on postings on Blatchat and CC advice re. the CSRs.

FWIW, I think the dipstick is deceptive; the notched part usually suggests there is only oil at the tip; if you carefully examine the back it can be covered in oil to a mutch higher level.

There is a picture of my engine bay here http://picasaweb.google.com/gasmans7/CaterhamBuild...

Hope this helps!

Cheers for the pics. I spoke with Simon at Caterham Midlands this afternoon. He said he has had it on a couple of duratec engines that the breather throws oil into the plenum chamber sometimes when under load. The other reason why they are sure this is the problem is because my catch tank is bone dry, not even a drop, which is not normal. At least this I know is true as my C400 always used to breath oil in it.

He's going to make a couple of bungs so I can block them off, then I'll take it out for a razz to see if it's any different!
Failing that, I'll take a small amount of oil out, then try it again. I'll do what they say first, as it's under there warranty. Then if neither works, they can have the bloody thing back to sort out!

Cheers for the help

Caterham sent me a couple of bungs to block up the breather pipe underneath the plenum chamber. British engineering at it's best, where Caterham are concerned here! Two 10mm allen bolts with the threads cust off!!! FFS, I have loads of them here I could have done that with. I was expecting a couple of nice bungs!!!

Anyway, the important thing is that I fitted them and took the car out for a good razzle and hey presto, no more smoke at all! All now seems to be running fine!
