Afternoon all,

I am after some advise/help if you would as I am not technically minded at all. I have a 2003 Superlight R300 and have owned it for just over 18 months, in which time I have had no problems at all.

However.. (they say that things always happen in three's!!)

I have got three little niggles/problems which if left, could be dangerous (well, being honest with myself, they are aready).

The first is the indicators, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.. The hazards do work which illiminates a bulb fault. I have taken the relay/flasher unit out and cleaned the contacts, but, once this worked, then they stopped working again making me think it could be something else. When they are working, the switch works perfectly, making me think it's not that either...any ideas?

The second is the Speedo, again, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (the actual needle doesn't show the speed), the mileage display is on contantly which would suggest it's probably not a power related issue. It does occasionally flicker, give a very brief reading, then the needle drops again. I can't seem to locate anywhere obvious on the engine/gearbox (1.8 K Series) where I could identify a speed sensor, any ideas where this might be and if this is likely to be the cause??? Could it be related to the indicators not working or is this just coincedence?

The third is abit more worrying (I thought the Pirbright Bends seemed to be abit more challenging than usuall as the rear end was abit more lively!!!!). About a week ago I hit quite a subsantial pot hole (on these wonderful roads which we pay fortunes for) and seem to have sheared a bolt on the passenger side rear. Please bear with me as I have very little knowledge on what bits are called!! On the end of the Anti-Roll bar there is a black arm about 15-20 inches long. One end is attached to the anti-roll bar, the other has a metal adjustable spindle which bolts on the rear of the hub assembly. It is this top bolt (through the top of the spindle into the rear of the hub assembly) that I have sheared causing the black arm and spindle to hang down. The bolt has an allen key type head to it. Fortunatly, I managed to get the remaining part of the bolt out so just need a replacement, anyone know what this is called?

I appreciate any help I can get and the garage is always open with cold beers in the fridge to anyone who can come and show me how to tinker correctly!! thumbup

Many thanks in advance!

The sheared bolt you describe sounds like one end of the drop link: https://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product_info.php?p...

There are two of these on a threaded rod with locknuts stoping the ends from undoing.

The other symptoms could be a dodgy earth connection - look at the one joining the engine to the chassis (normally on the LHS attaching to the engine mount rubbers.

Morning Steve,

Thanks for you reply, that part does the same job as the one on my car but is not exactly the same!?!? On that picture, there is a swivel joint with a thread on it, on my one, there is a bolt that goes through a swivel... scratchchin

The speedo sensor plugs into the right hand side of the gearbox housing and can be seen quite clearly from underneath the middle of the car. It's very simple to change and costs about £50 from CC.

There are two probably faults on your car:

a) Wires worn through. My 2003 Caterham was fitted with a sensor that had protruding wires that rubbed on the car, and they eventually wore through. Newer ones from Caterham have the wires exiting at a different angle, which solves the problem.

b) Sensor broken internally. The quill that goes into the gearbox and picks up the speed can break. I think Ewenm on this forum says he has ordered new quills in the past, but I needed a whole new sensor due to problem a) anyway, so I didn't investigate this further.

The sensor is easily replaced; it just screws onto a thread on the side of the gearbox. It can be a little tricky to insert the sensor as there isn't much space, but it's possible. My car has an access hole so it can be done from inside the cockpit level with the floor on the transmission tunnel -just under where your thighs go. I'm not sure that this hole is standard though.
