R500 Review in EVO this month
Discussion
Great article and sadly Jethro's last for evo. (now that he's off to Driver's Republic)
He really seemed to put a lot of emotion and heart into the piece, really good work.
I thought evo were a bit mean to wish Meaden, Bov and co all the best in the teeniest, tiniest font at the foot of the 'credits' page where nobody is ever going to see it. By contrast Autocar pretty much published Chris Harris' autobiography....
What with that and David Vivian's column/rant about how webzines apparently aren't the future and that publishing on the internet just isn't right for a 'special' topic like cars (yeah, because nobody likes to hear the noise of a car or see it move do they David, and this internet lark will never take off?!?! ), it sounds like the management at evo are a little bit threatened by their new competition, eh?

It's an internet magazine basically. It's a nice idea, but most of us that buy and drive performance cars spend 8 or more hours a day sat in front of computer screens; when we get home we want to relax in an armchair and read a magazine for a bit. I can't see me sitting down in front of another computer screen! It's a great shame, as Jethro B, Chris H and Richard M were my three favourite car journalists! EVO Magazine, in particular, will be massively affected.

I agree whole heartedly chap, as much I love Pistonheads et al there really is nothing quite like sitting in my armchair on a sunday morning reading my gaggle of magazines. The last thing that I really want to be doing is sitting in front of a monitor.I for one will continue buying Evo etc for the forseeable future...........

There seems to be a myth going round the publishing world that online is the way forward. Yes, it should complement printed media, but it'll never replace it and I think traditional books and magazines are here to stay. I think the current balance by EVO and Autocar of having a magazine with video footage on the website (e.g. Chris on Camera) is spot on.
It's just such a shame that we've lost the three best motoring journalists in the country. No longer will I be able to grab a comfy chair in the garden with a cold beer and read about Meaden or Bov's adventures through Europe in a supercar, the annual car of the year fest (which I always read in its entirity), or occupy a journey up to London on the train reading another accurate and worthwhile Chris Harris test in Autocar.
A great, great shame

Yep I saw all of that. I understand there is predominantly one reason why all these guys left the magazine...He really seemed to put a lot of emotion and heart into the piece, really good work.

Autocar review is also very positive on the new car. Bodes well for Caterham's future.
Excellent news Edited to add.
Just read the Autocar review and by golly do I want an R500 more than ever, always thought I would rather have a conventional 'box but this sequential affair sounds abso-ruddy-lutely brilliant.
I miss my Caterhams oh so much and reading this has not helped!

By several accounts, that 'box is seriously good - doesn't chunter, very civilised and reliable on-track which should translate to reliability off-track too.I
Apparently Track and Racecar Magazine have track tested it in Caterham's own race CSR, according to a thread on Blatchat.
As to the reason they left Evo?...can't say anything I'm afraid, but some should be able to work it out and if you ever bump into Dickie Meaden, I am betting he'll tell you if you ask him...Jethro would too I'd think.
Hmm! I've subscribed to EVO since day one and I'm fairly sure I've actually read every word, so it'd be nice to know why DM and JB have left. I love DM's writing and really trust his opinion on cars. In addition, JB's been fantastic ever since he first joined as staff writer.
I'm not sure I'm ever likely to "bump into" them though to ask them!
Could you not e-mail us and tell us? I'm dying to know as I may even consider cancelling my subscriptions to EVO and Autocar because of this.

That teaser video for the new 'mag' looks great and having worked with the guys I wish them all the luck in the world. To me, Dickie and Jethro (along with maybe a couple of the others still at EVO) - were pretty much the heart of EVO.............BUT, while I know from first hand experience what ace drivers they are and how in control they would have been in all that brief footage it is certainly much more 'real' than an opposite lock still in a mag and given some of that footage was on public roads I really do wonder if they are doing us any favours. How long will it be before some guardian of the nanny state gets hold of this and waves it around in the house of commons. Don't get me wrong I love it but should we (petrolheads in general) be trying to be a little more low profile?
Oh and the R500? Where do I sign?
