Hi guys. I have an R1 Sylva Phoenix which came with a set of Caterham wheels fitted with 48r's. I am currently on the lookout for a spare set of wheels to fit some 21's on. Forgive me if I a wrong, but I think the wheels are called 14" "2 gates" or something???? Has anybody got a spare set they would like to sell?

The car has big brakes so I cannot go down to 13"s, and I have a big pile of 14" 48's and 32's to get through..... I would consider other 14" rims if anyone has some?? I am based near Caterham, Surrey. Many thanks. Lee.

Lee,

Two Gates are just one of many manufacturers making look-a-like minilites. The most popular and commonly found on Caterhams at least are the KN Minators. These are available in 14" and 13". These are the wheels George Polley will sell you.

I own a set of 13" KN Minators and also a set of 13" Supalites (both 6" fr and 7" rr) for my Caterham, they look very similar but have subtle differences. My car has uprated AP Racing 'big brakes' and the KN Minators fit round them just fine so I reckon you could be ok. The Supalites on the other hand do foul the calipers and I have yet to fit these to the car because of it. To fit them I will need to fit longer studs and a 3mm spacer. Not the greatest solution but I don't do punishing track work so I don't foresee any probs.

13"'s really are a better size for these types of car, I'm sure you will be fine with them. There are often sets of these for sale knocking around on e-bay and Blatchat (Lotus Seven club web forum)

Cheers

Thanks guys. The clearance problems are with my rear brakes. The front brakes are Outlaw calipers (no problem), but the rear apparently is Ford (I imagine Sierra Calipers) and this can foul 13" wheels, though not all (CXR clear)some 13" wheels rub badly. 14" does at least gives me slightly taller gearing ( helpful with the bike engine)

  • Is there anybody near me (Oxted, Surrey) who has 13" R500 wheels that would be willing for me to come to your house and let me trial fit one 13" wheel to my rear to check caliper clerance??? Would be a great help to me! I will bring beer.

A lot of Caterhams have Sierra rear calipers too and no clearance issues on 13" wheels, in fact there's loads of room.

If you're struggling, call Redline in Caterham - they might be able to lend you a 13" wheel for five minutes to test fit. I doubt CC would be quite so obliging but seeing as you're on the doorstep, perhaps worth a go?

Thanks very much, never heard of Redline but i will give them a try. And CC, i have dome work for them in the past, so they might come up trumps!

SS, have you returned to a Caterham again?

I would highly recommend Redline. Mick and John are great blokes and are very obliging.

Hi Tango7 - might be a case of mistaken identity I feel?

I bought my first Caterham three years ago and still have her. I was a club member between 1994-1999 but I was a non owner.

Cheers

Hi SS,

My mistake! Your namesake had the same name on Blatchat and after some problems with his car, I was surprised to see he/you had become an owner again...

No prob, thought as much.

Is/was the other SS Jamie J? Last I saw on one of the Swiss trips he had an Exige. Didn't know he had major Caterham woes though!

Hi Lee

I have another kit and know for a fact that 13" Minators will not fit over Sierra rear calipers. However, R500 wheels will, as seen here on another builder's car:

Cheers Tim, but I still think it would be better for me to actually try one in the metal before parting with £800 for wheels and tyres!!

Thanks to Peter i have saved myself £800! They foul on the handbrake spring (sortable), but more problematic is fouling on the lower wishbone nuts. Never mind. 14" it is without swapping the lower wishbones. So still if anyboy comes accross some 14" Caterham wheels give me a mail.

(Superb R500 by the way!)

If 13" wheels do fit, be careful where a tyre fitter places the balance weights, as I've seen some damaged fluid pipes (link pipe between the pistons) on AP calipers from pipe to weight interference...
